Would Patrick J Buchanan have been a better choice than Bush41, Dole, and Bush43?

I know that he favors tariffs but lower taxes overall. I also know that he favors closing all bases not on U.S. soil plus ending all foreign aid (he would've spent less than Clinton did on the military, presumably). He would have probably also dismantled, or at least greatly reduced CIA power. I read that he was against Medicare Part D and that while he supports the war on drugs, he also supports medical marijuana. I believe he also supports the gold standard and opposes FRB. He also would've cracked down on illegal aliens and not given them welfare benefits.

Does anyone here think that if he became president that he might have been a fiscal hawk?

I think he's a lot better than the RINO Bush family was. Other than Dr. Paul and maybe Steve Forbes, he's the only real Republican who has run for the party's Presidential nomination since probably Goldwater.

Nope.
Dude was too hateful, spiteful, and angry. Candidates need to be lovable. Even though we know once in office they will turn to shit.

A brain damaged orangutan would likely make a better president than your Mr. Buchanan.

That has always been the liberal attack line spun to demonize the guy because:

- He was totally against NAFTA, GATT and globalization.

*Thus far he has been vindicated on the effects of globalization has had on the US worker

- He was totally against illegal immigration even before it became a hot topic in the US.

*He has been right about the effects of the mass influx of illegals and how it has effected this nation.

- He was also totally against the starting of Iraq war.

*When the war was inevitable and started up he put his support behind winning the war and completing our objectives and not withdrawing until the job was done.

- He came out against the expansion of government and presidential powers under GWB along with being against the creation of the DHS.

His only major flaw politically is his social conservative views based primarily on his Catholic religious up bringing.

The late Molly Irvins probably had it pegged right when he called Buchanan "a piss poor populist."

But maybe we should ask what good these plethora of speculative anarchist420 posts do for this forum? Even from the perspective of 2020 hindsight, all we know is the mess and mistakes that the turkey elected got this country into, without knowing anything about the messes and mistakes the other Turkey not elected would have gotten our country into because they did not get elected.

But maybe it would be more productive to ask what would have happened if Gore had won in 11/2000 or if Kuchinich would have won in 11/2008. Or Hillary Clinton?

Why does anarchist420 seemingly prefer to only reach for the very bottom of the rotten candidate barrel to advance his choices? As if our OP is only saying, see we could have done even worse than GWB&co.

And that flaw is a what doomed him.

Too bad, some of the stuff he says makes since. But when politicians start spouting off that Bullshit Social Conservative/Religious Fundie crap the public turns their back on them and rightfully so.

Cheer up all ye forum junkies, we will have plenty of time to slime all of our wannabee candidates for POTUS in 2012. Less than 675 shopping days left.

Why discuss past failed turkey when we can discuss fresh lemons?

Ya an angry president is a scary president. Look at John Mcains temper. Dude would flip out on TV all the time and cause a world war if a kid walked on the lawn of the white house...

I actually agree with just about all those things.
And plenty of people here would describe me as hateful, spiteful and angry.

;)

My point wasnt about the candidates. It was about voters. People nowadays are so soft and weak and cowardly and incredibly ignorant as to how the world works, they need a figurehead whos kind and gentle and lovable. They are voting for an image, an ideal. Kennedy was a beautiful man but a rotten president. Nixon was hated like the black plague be he actually did a lot of good things.
