Would MS let me switch my 32 bit Win 7 key for 64 bit?

I got a copy last year of Win 7 Ult 32 bit at one of the trade events. They didnt have a 64 bit copy, so that wasnt an option. Im wondering if MS would let me switch to a 64 bit key? Or is the key tied to the version, and not the bit version?

If you can get 64bit install media of the same type, the 32bit key will work with that. For Vista, I ordered their alternate media for 64bit. I had a 32bit NFR version.

So a key that came with a 32bit OEM Home Premium disk will work on an 64bit OEM Home Premium disk? My roommate is upgrading his work computer from an Athlon XP to a Core 2 Duo and just bought 7 so obviously doesn't want to have to buy it again.

There is no such thing as a 32-bit key and a 64-bit key. All are the same. You just need the right DVD to install from, 32-bit or 64-bit, and the right edition, OEM or retail.

I also got it from the MS Launch event and it was 32 bit DVD only at that time.
But MS did send the 64 bit DVD just before Thanksgiving ... you had to email
them with your name, address and some other info and they sent it out. I do not recall the exact post just now, but it was on Anandtech somewhere.

Just as note.

If the x86 (32bit) was already install and activated the x64 might not activate.

In such case call MS activation, explain, and the activation would be switched.

Installing x64 is Not an in-place upgrade, if installed on top of x86, so make sure that you have a good backup of the previous installation.

.

I have an OEM copy of Vista 32 bit. I tried installing Vista 64 bit without a key and then when the time came, I entered the 32 bit key and it activated. I had already activated the key on that computer using Vista 32 bit a year or two prior.
