Would like to make a few upgrades

Hello fellow Anandtechies,

I'd like to upgrade my current PC which is used primarily for business applications. I'm looking for suggestions on what parts to purchase. Here's what I'm interested in getting:

- Over 1Ghz processor, but the manufacturer doesn't really matter to me
- Decent mobo (I've been using Abit for a long time and have had no problems with it)
- 512MB RAM (I already have 2 128MB DIMS but not sure if they'll work with the new processor)
- Decent 2D/3D video card. Keep in mind this machine is not for playing games, but will be used for a bit of graphic design (but nothing intense like CAD).

That's about it. I've been out of the hardware loop for a while so I'm lost as far as what's good and what's not.

Your suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks friends!

What do you have now? Business applications really don't need much horsepower so I doubt you need a 1GHz+ processor. You might be able to put a faster CPU in your Abit motherboard, making this an easy and cost-effective upgrade. The 256MB of memory you already have is as much as you need, but a new video card would probably be nice...think Matrox.

The office PC is a P2-400 -- not worth putting a new chip on this old mobo. I definitely want something over a gig though, just for kicks. I'm not necessarily looking to upgrade with cost-effective parts. I will, however, shop around a bit to make sure I'm getting a relatively decent price. I just don't know what hardware to look at. I'll start taking a look at some Matrox cards while I wait for more replies to this topic 🙂

Thanks again!
