Would like to build a second comp for simple stuff

Stuff I have:

athon 64 4000+
2x512kb pc3200 ddr ram
dvd optical drive
oem copy of winxp (used once on my home gaming rig)

would need to get:

mobo
hard drive ( can be very small capacity, OS plus 10 gigs would be plenty)
gpu (or skt 939 mobo with onboard video?)
case
psu

My office comp is an old dell with a 400mhz pentium 2 and 256 ram. All I need it to do is run some very basic software and do basic web stuff. It can do this no problem, however, there are signs of imminent death. The psu is probably failing and I thinks it's about to kick the bucket.

I want to replace it with a sytem using the above parts because they have very little resell value. This is something i should pursue, right?

I hope your RAM modules are 512MB, not 512kB. 😉

How much are you willing to spend on this? Since the rest of the parts are old anyway I would consider getting as much as possible used, like from the For Sale/For Trade forum.

Yeah, they're 512 mb. Single core socket 939 cpus and ddr ram fetch very little even if you're lucky enough to find someone who wants them. I've tried. As to what I'm willing to spend- not much, as little as possible.

Would like suggestions on a case, psu, mobo and hard drive- as cheap as possible, that will do the job.

I know this isn't one of those sexy "I've got 5k help me build a monster" threads 🙂

It is Not a matter of suggestions it is a matter of what you would be able to find.

As an example NewEgg offers a "Huge" choice of one 939 motherboard.

It has on board S3 Graphics UniChrome Pro IGP which is OK for regular use.

There is a real huge selection of sub $50 case/psu that would work with your hardware.

So for about $100 you can a nice PC up and running.

Otherwise "Raid" the For Sale Forum.
