Would like some ATOT advice on this subject ...

No Lifer
Monday my wife started her travels to bolivia with 2 of her friends. They flew from DC to Miami on American Airlines, then from Miami to Peru on LAN, and that is when the problems started.

They arrived in Peru at 5am and their next flight was not leaving until 12:30pm, so they were hanging at the airport and sleeping right near their gate.

So around noon or so, the people at the gate told them the flight had changed to a different gate, so they ran over to the new gate. When they got to the new gate the people there then told them it was somewhere else.

When they arrived at the final gate where the flight was at, they had finished boarding but the plane was still at the gate. They would not let them on the plane at all. They tried and tried to just let them get on the plane but the people would not budge.

So then the airline tells them that there is another flight at night around 11pm from Peru to Bolivia and that they will have to purchase new tickets for $400 a piece + a $27 fee for using a credit card to pay.

This is when my wife called me to tell me the problem, and she told me to look for flights online for her. Unfortunately it was too short notice for me to book flights for them online.

She and her friends also told me that they believed the people were taking advantage of them since they saw they were from the USA. While she was on the phone with me too, the people working for the airline magically told them that the $27 fee could now be waived once they knew i was looking for flights elsewhere. My wife asked me for the 1800 number for this airline and i gave it to them and they were going to try and call the offices and try to work something out. I then got off the phone.

So I then get a call from my wife last night after they arrived in Bolivia. She told me that things got kind of worse too at this airport and with the airline, and that the 1800 number would not go through from where they were in Peru, even with a calling card they had.

Since they needed to now buy new tickets, they had to leave the part of the airport with the terminals and stuff and had to go back out to the counters to purchase new tickets. Since they were going to be there all day they decided to get a tour of Peru and did that for the day.

When they came back to the airport, the same people were working at the airline when they went to check in. She said the people there then searched her bag and took liquor from her that she had bought earlier that day at the airport, which was a gift for someone in Bolivia, and they would not let her bring it with her.

It was still packaged the way they package liquor when you buy it in the airport, but they would not let her take it. She said the people were being complete jerks to them and again felt they were being taken advantage of because they had american passports. She tried to tell the guy if she cant take it she wants to pour it all out into the trash right there, but they would not let her do that since they had already taken it. She thinks they were going to take the liquor to drink it themselves.

So I guess the advice i'm wondering is I want to let this company know about the situation and try to get refunded the $400 for her ticket (and the other 2 girls as well if possible) and let them know how she was treated. The airline is TACA and they actually have an office like 10 miles from me in DC. I was thinking of going in there in person with my wife when she gets back and telling them the whole situation with exact details, flight #'s, etc, and I also wanted to wait for my wife to get home before I go there because I don't want them to screw around with her anymore than they already have.

So anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to go about this?

Sorry, no cliffs.

1. even though the carriers played gate musical chairs on them, i think they should have had adequate time to be informed of the gate change to make it on time. other people would have needed to know that as well
2. if they missed their flight, they should have been placed on standby for next flight for FREE.
3. LAN is not a shady carrier..theyre a full service carrier with oneworld alliance.... not like smaller players like TACA...
4. ...then I read the end of the post where your troubles are with TACA... well... in that case... you may be truely effed... knowing youre US-based they really dont value your service so i dont know how far you can get with them

Goddamn man. I don't have any advice for ya (other than set the airport on fire) but I hope you and your wife get reimbursed for all the shit they put her through.

yea the worst part is that i felt completely helpless cause i couldn't do anything and my wife was crying on the phone with me. that sucked 🙁

she also told me she kind of broke down when they searched her stuff and she said they took ALL of the stuff out of her bag, like completely empty, right infront of everyone, and then took her liquor.

LS21 that is the thing, they should not have had to pay for a new ticket, and this flight was not one that was packed full by any means.

That sucks. Sounds like they just completely fucked your wife and her friend around because they're Americans.

<--Scratches South America off the list of places to visit. :|

so they missed the TACA, not the LAN flight right? check their website for terms and conditions

yah they missed the TACA flight, the LAN one went fine.

i found some phone #'s on the TACA website but I will look at the terms and conditions as well, thanks.

i would leave out the sleeping part, more than likely that may be why they missed the announcement for the gate change.

How did the rest of the passengers get on the plane?

Who did you book the tickets through originally? Might want to bring it up with them as well.

I would think that if they got to the original gate ~30 minutes prior to departure then it isn't really their fault that the gate changed on them twice. Sleep or no sleep.

What airline was/is this? When I missed a plane in PHX Sky Harbor due to my own retardedness, US Air busted their ASS trying to get me on another flight back home ASAP, on their own dime even using other airlines. While your wife was pretty much screwed right there and then, as she had no other options except being stuck there, she did what she had to do and buy the new tickets.

I would call the airline IMMEDIATELY and bitch to high-heaven. There's no reason why you should have had to do that in the first place. They may refund some (all?) of the charges or at the very least give vouchers for free flights.... you will get SOMETHING though for sure. Just start dilaing and start bitching.

And how did you book them? If on a CC, file a complaint with them, you might be able to get a refund without having to deal with the airline at all.

this, something fishy is going on. I've been on planes that had waited up to an hour for missing passenger, especially in international flights. I heard the general rule is that as long as you have your boarding pass, they will have to go out of their way to find you or they can't leave.

If there's a next time, check in a luggage, it will stall the plane longer because they will have to unload it from the plane before they can leave.

This. Do a chargeback!!! That'll get them to call you 🙂

no way will an airliner dig through cargo to unload a passengers belongings. if youre not physically on the plane, they'll eventually ship it close to you and deliver in person... but noones unloading it for you

it was TACA as i stated in my OP 😛 the problem is TACA does nothing in the US and probably knows they will have no repeat business from my wife and her friends, so i don't know how much i can really get out of this.

they were not sleeping even 2 hours prior to the flight, they slept between like 5:30am and 9am. no clue how the rest of the passengers knew where to find the plane.

I have had experience with my luggage not being unloaded on a missed flight. I wouldn't suggest doing it on purpose.

I would contact the CC company and file a compaint. Otherwise it doesn't really seem like there are any other options. Sounds like a douche airline. I wont be flying them if I ever am in South America.

i guess that's different between airlines. i was on a flight on Asiana leaving Korea and they did took time to unload them after they've done waiting.
