Would like opinions for possible new computer

Hi. I?m looking at getting a new computer. I am on a limited budget (about 2 1/2 g AU) and have put together a system that I think is reasonable. What are people opinions of this system? It will be used for gaming, video and audio encoding, compressing and uncompressing files, running servers, compiling and just general use. I will quite often be running a server at the same times as myself and others are playing on them so multitasking/processing is important. One server by it self tends to chew the ram like crazy (1 gig on its own) and the games all tend to like a bit of ram. Games I play include Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft, Unreal Tournament and anything else that I may happen to come across. Will this system suite my needs or is it to much for what I use it for? Any suggestion welcome except getting an AMD (I have always had Intel and never had a problem with them and would like to stick to them)

Thanks

Intel Socket 775 Pentium D 830 3.0GHZ 800MHZ FSB Dual Core CPU
Zalman CNPS9500LED (Copper) CPU Cooler
Asus P5WD2-PREMIUM I955P PENTIUM D 4xDDR2 Raid PCI-EX GLan LGA775
DDR2 1G PC4300 DDR2 RAM Kingmax
DDR2 1G PC4300 DDR2 RAM Kingmax
Western Digital 250G SATAII 7200 rpm HDD
Albatron 256MDDR3 7800GT PCI Express Video VIVO DVI
Liteon 16xDVD ±R/RW with software Double Layer(1635s)
Thermaltake Shark Full Tower Silver Case

looks good i dont know about the albatron card though never had one before so i cannot comment on that but the 7800 gt is a good choice 🙂

also in general AMD processors are better now there cheaper they run cooler and out preform Intel processors very easily

lol Gadzookie..he said in his post that he wouldn't consider going to AMD.

Id get a NEC 3540 or Benq 1640 other than that Liteon.

Yes it comes with a 400Watt Quality Thermaltake Power Supply but I?m thinking that this should probably be replaced with a bigger one (500watt?). Anyone have any opinions as to what to replace it with? Excelsior why would you choose the benq and NEC over the liteon?

DVD burner roundup if you want to check out what AT has to say about some of them.

If you're going to replace the PSU, maybe get a case that doesn't come with one already?

Eh, not bad, I defiantly wouldn't use the Thermaltake PSU, they have weak 12v rails, and you need a lot of 12v power for that extremely power hungry toaster of a CPU.

I know you don't wanna hear it, but you'de be better off with an AMD X2 3800+, it's faster at stocks speeds, and runs a LOT cooler, just look around on this forum to see the rediculous temps the very few Intel Dual Core users are getting..

Enermax, Antec, Fortron, Seasonic, 450w or higher if you want. Enermax usualy has very strong 12v rails, I used a 460w enermax for my overclocked P4 system. My 450 Antec works great with my dual core AMD system. Make sure you get one with a 24pin ATX connector.

Are skyhawk any good? I can get a SkyHawk GM-620SC(true 620W) Max peak 690W (ATX) with Audio Standby for $109.00 compared to Antec ATX TruePower TrueControl 550W with Fan Controler for $189.00. To me the skyhawk seems a much better deal as it offers more power for less money. Is this the case or is the skyhawk to be avoided?

I wouldn't skimp on the power supply. Just because a PSU has a higher wattage doesn't mean it's better, especialy if it costs that much less. I've seen skyhawk cases before, but never PSU's. Pay very close attention to the 12v rail rating. From the specs the SkyHawk actualy looks alright, but I had a hard time finding much info on it that was in english.

you can get a bfg 7800GT for 312$ off dell.com with some coupon deals. just google dell coupons.

and I have and would highly recommend the antec smartpower 2.0 500w. Last I checked it was 75$ on newegg and has 2x12v rails running 17 and 19amps. Plus it's modular so you only use the cables you need. Some people seem to think you have to spend 150$+ to get a quality reliable PSU, but you don't.

Oh, and I was like you about intel for years, until I finally looked at the benchmarks and realized that higher clockspeed doesn't mean higher performance. AMD>Intel for every single aspect other than audio encoding right now.

jonesmaster the prices you quoted are in US dollars. If you read my original post you will see that my budget was set in AU (Australian dollars). This then means that newegg is not an option for me and I really can?t be bothered with currency exchange. But thx for the help anyway.

okay, a few things.
for videocard dont get albatron get an xfx of evga
and seriously consider getting on the amd bandwagon. i used to only use intels and never thought anything bad abou them. then i discovered the other side....
seriously. get the 3800 x2 with a dfi, epox, or dfi skt 939 motherboard.
