Would it make sense to join Vonage now?

Vonage, as everybody knows, is experiencing a crisis due to some stupid patent issue.

However, I just moved into a new home and want to use their service due to its cheap price. Would it make sense for me to do so?

Does anybody have any alternatives to Vonage that seem to be more stable over the long run?

Bueller?

Did Sunrockets service die a couple times in the past? Like a complete outage? I could be wrong...

Time Warner has one, but it's $30 a month. I can't justify spending $30 a month when I spend $30 on a cell phone a month (corporate discount plan ;)).

Ooh - that looks too good to be true, but I just might have to check it out.

Are there any stupid "FCC License" fees or other crap like that tacked on to the cost?

Well, this is for the family. We have a lot of mutual contacts and want a more "central" location for all calls.

Besides, my company pays for my cell-phone. :p

I heard there were some patent issues with Verizon that VOIP would be very difficult to do in general w/o access to those patent rights. I would hold off on VOIP by third parties personally (aside from cable)

I use Packet8. I've had their service for several years now and they've been very reliable and their customer service is not bad either.

All VoIP companies have outages every so often. SR has outages every so often. It will be fine for months and then you'll have no service for a few hours because something broke. ViaTalk is another option that lots of people use.

I wouldn't use Vonage anyway because they are the most expensive VoIP company out there that I know of except for the cable companies that have their own phone service.

I use SR and have for over a year and am satisfied with it. Just be sure to have a Cell Phone for back up just in case.

Another satisfied SunRocket customer.

For the price point (got in on the $199 for two years, free gizmo), it can't be beat.

I use ViaTalk, they are currently offering 2 years for $199. Have had it about a year without any problems.

My service renewed in January and sometime recently they had to start charging those fees. I don't remember exactly but it was +-$10/yr.

Recently switched to ViaTalk. The offer so much more for the price and the account management interface is so easy to use.

Vonage's customer service is terrible. If you are looking for a VOIP provider, Vonage should be the last on your list.

ViaTalk is currently running a special...2 years for $199

PM if you need a referral;)

I'm surprised that no one has suggested Skype yet. Granted it requires a computer- but you certainly can't beat the prices and the features you get with it. I have it for my Dorm (No Cell Service on 1st Floor) and I love it- everything automatically tries my Cell first, if I don't pick up it goes to my Skype phone.

The only qualm I have with it is the software. It is nice overall but consumes ~40-50MB of memory (Not much considering most of us have ~2GB)
