Would it have been a good idea for CD caddies to remain?

Remember the caddies that were first around when CD-ROMs arrived on the scene? do you think it's a good or a bad thing that they ceased to exist? On one side, yeah they were bulky and would have forced drives to be that bit bigger, but everyone must have been through the PITA that is trying to read from an old CD that's been left lying somewhere and scratched to hell. If it was standard for all CDs to be sold in caddies and remain there, this wouldn't happen.

What do you think?

If you can't take care of your crap, then you deserve to have to buy another copy. It's not THAT hard to put it in a jewel case when you are done.

To top it off, consider that companies would just pass the cost right to YOU.

i agree, caddies suck. Leave you cd's and dvd's in the cases and only take them out when you need to, then you'd be good. or if not cases, cd folders. the only case I can see working is in your car, in say those folder-like things that hold cd's on your overhead visor. Most of my cd's tend to get scratched somewhat in that thing.

This is true, and I do keep my own disks in decent order, but it's when someone hands you a disk at the office or a friend lends you one and there's more scratches on it than a man wearing bramble trousers.

Do those scratch removing devices actually work? Looks like they shave a layer or two off the surface... anyone had experiences, good or bad?

Make it double sided.

What about 3-4 disc sets? Still fits in 1 fat jewel case.
No slot load players.
Even w/ single discs, portable CD players would be a lot bigger as would car players.
