Well, how do your games play? Notice any struggling to maintain playable framerates anywhere? Have to turn anything down to get something playable? If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes", then it may "behoove" you to go crossfire.

Giddyap!!

Well no at the moment everything I play I can run maxed out and I don't drop below 60fps. My main concern is future proofing. I would have just bought a single 5850 or 5870 but I got my 5770 in trade for my 4870.

Then you might as well wait for the prices to drop to pick up a second 5770. If you have no probs playing what you have now, by the time a game emerges to tax your single 5770, by that time prices should be a bit lower. Might as well wait and save a few bucks.
But, that is up to you.

Are CF 5770s a value proposition? I'm sure I've seen them handily outclass a 5870 in a few benchmarks (scaling oddness, to say the least)?

Hmm, seems I could get two 5770s for about 370 AUD here, cheapest 5870 is ~500 AUD...

Exactly..by the time you need it, you'll either find it for less, or have better options available for the same money.

Waiting, in this case, is a win-win.

If none of your games drop below 60 fps then don't do it.

This. If your not able to play at high or very high settings without smooth performance then perhaps consider it. I imagine for now your 5770 suits you just fine. Maybe in the next 3-6 months the price will drop substantially and you can toss another one in when performance dips.

Well most likely I won't be spending cash but cash converted into gift cards. So it changes the whole save your money debate. The only other thing I would want to spend that on would be an SSD and honestly capacity to cost ratios aren't where I want them to be yet.

Unless your gift cards expire, they do not differ in anyway from actual cash. Money saved now can be put toward an SSD later. Not telling YOU how you should spend your money. After all, it's your money. I'm just telling you what I would do, were I in your position.
Cheers.
