I currently have e2160/p35 mobo, should I wait for quad to be cheaper or go for e8xxx? Honestly tho, I'm probably not going to buy a new proc soon if it's above $120

I'm in the same boat as well. I have an E2200 paried with a 4870. Needless to say my CPU is bottlenecking games :(

The upgrade itch is getting pretty fierce here too. My gaming box is an E2180 at 3.2 ghz. I have a couple of intel quads sitting around doing work, but now I'm considering a Q-something or better for my gaming box as well...

Briefly thought about PII 940 but with a 920 I7 being only $230 at a local microcenter, $190 gigabyte board and 6 gigs of quality DDR being just a bit over $100 it seems like a sin to skimp on the upgrade just to save a hundred bucks or so.

Games and drivers are starting to take advantage of quad (or more) cores. I'm not sure a dualie upgrade will last long enough to be worthy.

An E7400 for $119 should OC to 3.8Ghz with relative ease. Depending on what your e2160 is clocked at... that might be worth it.

I would pick up an E8400 in the Forsale/trade forum here, or on fleabay. I've seen them go for $85 - $125.

I have seen them more on the high end of that at 120-140....85 would be a steal....pick it up...

Perhaps an E7300 if you want to OC a bit....a bit more L2 cache and a chip that should hit 3.6ghz...

I've been thinking about upgrading, and I think I'll just wait till quads get cheaper instead of picking up another dual core. I figure it'll be a lot more useful in the long run instead of a dual core, even for gaming. My E2160 at 3GHz holds me back a little, but nothing's really unplayable (GTA4's borderline, but I'm still hoping a patch somehow fixes that).

I've been thinking of upgrading also, around tax time. My 2160 is at 3.2 GHz in an IP35-E board. Either I would like to put an 8400 in there, or try a new Phenom II 940 and a new mobo to see how that does. I've heard the Abit IP35-E board is not the most 8400 friendly depending on the bios.

i'd upgrade that e21xx to a Qxxxx if you can drop it in, if it requires you to get anything else to upgrade the cpu (i.e. PSU/RAM/MOBO) then just do a full upgrade to Phenom II or i7
