so another candidate was chosen for the summer internship which is paid

I interviewed before him and I didn't do well

Obviously, he just had better communication, interviewing experience, and social skills than I do

I was really looking forward to this and getting the rejection hurt

would it be worth a try to email the person that interviewed me and ask him for an unpaid position?

Unpaid intern in a for-profit company? Sounds like a bad idea. Seriously, don't do it.
