Would it be wise to wait for the 8600gt ultra before stepping up?

I still have 50days left on my step up.. I was jumping on the 8800gts 320, but now I am wondering if the 8600gt ultra 512 might be a faster card overall.

Im in the same boat as you. i just bought a evga 7900gs yesterday and i plan to do the same.

1. What makes you think there will be a 512MB version? Why not 320/640MB?

2. What makes you think that any 8600 card (GT? Ultra? GT Ultra WTF?) would outperform the 8800 GTS-320?

The 8600 ultra wil run 500 core, 1400 memory, and will have 64 shaders and 512mb ram.
With a 256 bit memory bus.

The 8800gts is running at 500 core 1600 memory, and has 96 shaders,320 mb ram. with a 320 bit memory bus. I think the shaders will be clocked higher also. (just a guess)

I would say the gts will outperform the ultra. Faster memory,32 more shaders (clocked higher?),and a faster memory bus.

The ultra seems on par with a 7900gtx. Nvidia mid range new products are usually around the speed of there old flag ship.

I was more thinking that the 512 ram would be far more beneficial. The benchmarks on the 320 version of the 8800gts are not so great right now. Of course I am gaming at 1440x900 so it may be a non issue for me.

The other thing is that a lot of people say go for the 640 instead. Cant afford that cause it is still $439 on evgas step up.

so that is why I was wondering.

At that resolution the 8800gts -320 will smoke anything in the 300.00$ price range.
And performs at the same exact level as the 640mb version. I'd step up now.

As am I. I checked and it lists the GTS as "backorder" so waiting can not hurt. I am going to try and wait for the 8600 ultra. I really want a single slot cooler and I want to see how it will compare to my 7950GT.

Its not backordered.
I submitted my step up.. and within hours they confirmed and started the process.

I dont understand what your "waiting" for. Price drop? ATI has nothing comming in the mid- range for months and the top end card you will need a new power supply for. The only thing I can see is a nvidia refresh but thats probrobly at least 2 months away also.
I think your giving up 48 days of high end gaming for nothing. THe 8600ultra will NOT be as fast as any 8800 period.
