Would it be too much for a 5 year old?

My little girl is turning 5 this week. I'm thinking about getting her a 1/2 size guitar. Every time I have one of my guitars out she's right up in my lap wanting to strum. She's talked about wanting one for a while but I'm afraid she'd just treat it like another toy. However, teaching her how to play on something she could actually grip would be very rewarding and a good family activity. Right now she's at that age where she soakes up konwledge like a sponge. I know she'd be AWSOME if she began learning how to play now. At the same time I remember my mom trying to shove piano lessons down my throat when I was her age and I balked. I don't want to do that to her, but at the same time I never wanted to play the piano, she wants to play the guitar.

What do you folks think? (And if you don't have something constructive or serious to say then save it for another thread!)

Buy her the instrument, I did for my little guy, now he thinks he's Angus Young :)

I think it sounds like a great idea. Get um started early if it's something they enjoy! :D

If you play along side of her, I think it would be a great idea. She probably is interested, because you are. If you send her for lessons, it will most likely be a waste.

I'd get one, if it's not too expensive(no point in spending loads on something that might get broken/never used).

I would have loved to have learned the guitar when I was younger so that I could play it now. Wish I'd had the chance.

Give your daughter the chance I never had.

at this age she would probably have more fun with a wooden box with a stone inisde of it...

Sounds like a good idea. She seems young. But if she really likes it she's not too young.

Get one if it's not too expensive. And yes... if you're the one that at least begins the teaching (ie, no lessons just yet)... it sounds like she'd still be interested. Later on when she's a bit older she could have formal lessons if she's still liking it.

Dude, don't make it into a PSA.;) (j/k)

It was a p!ss take anyway, my mum asked me if I wanted guitar lessons 2 years ago, never took up any offer though (she had a friend who could have taught me).

Anyway, just buy the freaking guitar :p

I think I'm going to go ahead and do it. We could have a lot of fun and I found a couple 1/2 sizes at Guitar Center for $89.00. Not THAT big of deal to me if it gets trashed (plus it's better than her going to town on say.... my Les Paul).

Exactly the reason I still have my old Takamine sitting around. No kids yet, but when they come, they aren't touching mynicer guitars.

Give it a shot. I remember enjoying playing on the computer typing my numbers out on Notepad or some sort of word processor back in the day. I think thats what sparked my interest so I still enjoy computers today. Possibly it could be the same for her. She may not act extremely interested in it immediately, or learn how to play any song for the first few weeks, but I think eventually after plucking on it for a while she may just get a spark one day and actually have the desire to learn how to play songs.... sort of like me with learning how to type. :)

Good luck and I hope she enjoys it if you decide to get it for her! :)

if you want to her to learn an instrument, piano is the one i would reccomend, if she ends up liking music she can pick up any other instrument fairly easily after learnig piano

edit:

I cannot play the piano but wish i could, i learned saxophone and my sister learned the double bass and clarinet.

I agree with this statement. I'd get her the guitar, but see if you can find a small childrens keyboard as well.

She's had a keyboard for a while now and mostly like to pound around on it. I can't play it so I'm not too much help other than a little "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" just from poking around on the keys myself.

Edit: She's come up with some songs before from playing by ear so I know she's musically inclined and man is she proud of herself when she figures something out!
