Would it be inappropriate to not dress up for prom?

Yeah so I'm going to prom in a few weeks, I got a free ticket, and dinner is included. So that means thus far my costs are, well none! I really don't want to go out and rent a tux or something like that, and I don't want to wear normal clothes and feel outdressed. So I was thinking I could wear my nice pants, and just throw on a shirt and wear flip flops. :D Do you think this is out of line? I don't really care ( or do I? :( ) how everyone else is dressed or anything. And hey, if I can win some cash at the casino afterwards I might even come out ahead! ( Unlike that other thread about $600+ proms ).

Oh and our prom is going to be at some golf course, isn't that a little cheesy? Other places I hear rent out these big halls and stuff, although it'll be better than last years, which was at a petting zoo/farm!! *sigh*

believe it or not, there are some people at prom who will be upset if you don't go dressed up. Having every single person there wearing formal attire just makes it special for some people. One of my friends went in a non-traditional tux that was almost a kimono, just to be different, and there quite a few people making snide comments about it. Some schools won't even let you in if you don't wear a tux. And as far as being at a golf course--that's a lot cooler than our prom, which is always held at school.

Scrub. Just wear some black slacks and rent shoes/vest/tuxedo-shirt that way it looks like u just dont have ur jacket on :) - My friend did that last year and it only cost like 20 bux or so. You could also wear a suit. Dressing up is a big chunk of prom since you see everyone (All ur scrub friends) dressed up nice and everyone looks older and elegant...its pretty cool and its part of the fun of it.

Do you have a date? If so, get a tux. They aren't that expensive. If you don't have a date, it's going to be the last time you see most of those people. So, who cares?

If you don't already have a suit, it's a good time to go buy one. You'll need it for job interviews anyway. After I started college, three of my older relatives died in a year, and I was pallbearer at all three funerals, so I needed one for that.

Parents might be more willing to spring for a suit then a $70 tux rental that you wear for 8 hours.

I know, but it's better than sitting here doing nothing all night ;) And I got a free ticket, which includes dinner!

So basically you are just a bastard? Why dress like a fool and create a scene in front of those that play by the rules?

Well, Im not going to create a "scene" or anything, trust me that's the last thing I want to do. I just want to avoid all the formalities of it all.

Then don't go. Is that so hard?

Exactly what gwlam said, if you want to avoid the "formalities" then why even bother going? I thought the Prom was supposed to be formal.
