What do you think.

Would it be economically wise for MS to cause W2k to become odious (SP2) at the time of XP's arrival?

I would not consider XP if W2k would remains stable with upcoming software. Did want to try SP2 for some of the fixes, but rather live without, after hearing about the problems so far.

Personally I don't think this was planned, but it seems that to some, even goofs can be turned into profits.

No, they have just started to shed some of the "bad light" from 9x OS'es by bringing forth and OS that could be used by the average home user with W2K.

You have to remember a SP is like a new version of the OS in a sense. There will always be incompatibilites that are found. That's why most administrators take a "wait and see" approach with a new SP. SP1 is pretty much a safe bet right now, but remember all the problems that were spotlighted when it arrived???

Installing a SP is a decision that shouldn't be taken lightly. If you don't need it, don't install it!!! Many times there are hot fixes that will fix a isolated problem you have, instead of having to apply a SP. It always amazes me at the number of people that view SP's as a cure-all for their computer. That's not what it is at all.

I don't really think that from an economic standpoint it would be of any real benefit to MS to do this. However I don't think anything like that would hurt them much right now either since they have a good hold on the desktop industry. Please spare me the Linux BS from the pro-Linux people, it's as ready for the desktop as I am to play professional baseball. Call me when there's true application support, not alternative stripped down applications.

Yeah, I'm not buying the conspiracy theory on this one, as much as I'd like to.
I do think they take XP's imminent arrival as license to play around a bit more without worrying about the potential incompatibilities though.
