Would it be difficult for a Canadian to get US citizenship?

I'm 22 years old and finish college this year.

Have been thinking of changing my location to California or Arizona (been to both). Tired of this dreary northern crap 48 weeks of the year.

What are my prospects for actually getting citizenship? I don't have any dependants whatsoever, will have my post-secondary paper and ~$30K USD saved by August (won't be abusing the system if that makes a difference).

What have you done so far as to looking into this ? Have you contacted any US Government agencies that deal with immigration yet ?

I've googled around. Haven't called anywhere because I was hoping to find some firsthand experiences around here on the process, timelines and so forth. Then I'll dig through the immigration agency.

Heh and just a couple months ago it was all about Americans moving to Canada (because of the election).

I think you need to find a job that will sponsor you for permanent residency.

Look for a job in the states (a very high paying one if you intend on living in CA). It should help your case.

Of all places you want to move to CA?
I hope you have a high paying job lined up before you come.

CA isn't expensive all over. In the Lodi/Stockton area it seems that things are on the rise, but definitely now would be the time to invest, because they're still reasonable. Also, some Sacramento suburbs aren't too bad either. Basically you can get a nice house in the 250-300 range, and in Lodi/Stockton probably the 175-250 range. But since you'll be looking for an apartment most likely, you'll be fine pretty much anywhere.

You don't have to move the the Bay Area (it's a good thing I've been here all my life). There are plenty of cheaper places to live.

I could be wrong, but didn't the Skoorbs move to Alabama from Canada? You might want to ask them.

Slim to none. You will need to get sponsered by an employer in the US. If you have a skill set that is in high demand then there might be a chance. Even then that will only give you the right to work in the States. To become a citizen I guess read the links.

It will be difficult.

Use your Canuck charm, eh, and get some American chick to marry you. Should be pretty easy actually. Find some liberal nutjob in Berkeley or LA and tell her you'll release her from this nightmarish hell hole of a religeous wacko-run country to your frosty socialist paradise to the north. Once the deal is sealed, stall for the next 20 or 30 years. :)

I'm a Canadian immigrant living in the US since fall of '99 when I started college. Got my Green Card in Jan. 2000, but that was because my mom's company got them for me and my parents. I'm eligible for citizenship this year so I'm going to try and get it. I'll let you know how it goes, I figure I'll probably start a thread here when I start the process :)

It can be tough. I used to work with a lady who was Canadian on a work Visa in the US and she has been going through the citizenship process for literally years now. It is also at times tough getting a work Visa; liability issues for a company unless you have some super skillsets that make you valuable. To be honest at age 22 you probably don't offer anything to a company that they could not get already with a US citizen.

I do wish you luck. Pheonix is a great little place, one of the fastest growing areas of the country.

I say we set up a swap program......one conservative Canadian for one liberal US citizen.....then everyone wins.
