i bought a video card from someone in FS/FT, of which did not come with a drivers cd. the original drivers cd is necessary (see step 1, part b) to install optional software for this video card. if the seller does not have the original drivers cd, could i request a copy (as in cdr) of the original installation cd from someone else?

edit - how come it seems like every thread besides mine is getting locked here?

Since it's just a drivers CD then I wouldn't see why not, but other people may not approve.

The only problem that will arise is the driver's cd usually contains licensed software. By requesting a burned copy, you are in fact participating in software piracy.

but doesn't he have the right to the software since he did pay for the card? if the guy that he bought it from bought a retail card, and that software came with it, then a license was paid for by whoever he got the card from. As long as that person is not using that software any more, then there should be no problem. It is installed on one system, and one software licence was paid for. Does it really matter where the software came from in the end?

I personally see absolutely nothing wrong from a moral standpoint, and I would have no problem doing this on my own. I am not however a lawyer, and we all know that they do not always go down the moral road

Not for AIW... the licensed software is actually on seperate CDs. Anyways, you can order the CDs from ATI directly... i think they may even sell them on their site.

ATI driver discs contain the "ATI DVD Player" installations and in this case, is the licensed software. The DVD upgrade you download from the ATI site is really the full installation, but it checks for the earlier version on CD to make sure you're entitled to install the newer version.

Anyways, you can order the CDs from ATI directly... i think they may even sell them on their site.

You can buy the driver/DVD disc from ATI but if you go to their site, they expect you to have the older disc in hand (they require the CD part number) before letting you buy the DVD software.


The driver disc is one of the things I ask about when buying a used ATI card since I know it's been an issue since the Rage Pro days. spanky007: Just out of curiousity and even thought the site says "original installation CD for RADEON? 9000/9500/9700 series", have you tried an older, non-9000 series install CD when it asks to verify?

u know, i was just thinking about that last nite and might just give that a try
thanx for the feedback guys. i know ati sells the cd on their site... it's $10. but the additional $10 for shipping kinda hurts
