Would it be a good idea to start school at 10:00?

I'm doing an article for my school newspaper and i have to show both pros and cons of starting school at 10:00AM ending at 5:00PM. What do you guys think? It would just mess up the sports schedule for sure.

If you do some research on teenage "body clocks" you'll see that studies show that teenagers are more alert at around 10:00am and would benefit more by having school start at that time. Like if you had 8 hours of sleep and woke up at 10, you'd feel MUCH better than if you had the same amount of sleep and woke up at 7:00.

wouldn't it end at 4 if you started at 10? at my old high school the hours were 9 to 3.

8:30 to 3:10 for me...

I never listen for the first block (till 9:40) with any amount of sleep... after that I can absorb stuff.

10:00am! Wow! When I was in high school, school started at 7:55am. I would have killed for 10:00am, or even 9:00am.

Who has to be alert to do well in high school? I won't deny your claims about the body clock being ready and all(I know nothing about that), but c'mon... I'd imagine most non-high school students would just dismiss that as just another excuse to hit the snooze button a couple more times.

You could always do sports in the morning before school started...

However, the fact remains that schools don't always do what is best for the student, but rather what the faculty would like.

What about the middle school and elementary school kids. They will have to have their schedule change also

if it's high skool, then i tink 8:00 is fine. might as well get it over as soon as possible.

But if you're in college, then don't take any classes before 11:00. You'll find that you won't wake up til 10:00. then that leaves you 1 hour to get something to eat. And then if you don't hurry after that, you might miss your 11:00 class.
hehe... yep... 11:00 class still might be too early. Especially if you commute.
yeah... take it from me... don't commute unless you really really really really have to.

Yeah, school should of started at 10:00 AM and ended at 11:00, that's about all I could take.

all that babbling and i forgot what the original question was.

Anyways, pros and cons:

pros (of starting skool at 10am):
more sleep for you
you can stay up later playing counterstrike
you'll be less tired in the morning

cons:
you'll be very tired at the end of the day when skool get's out at 5. (and don't forget you'll be doing this for every day for about 10 months straight... that's a lot of tiring days).
Would you really want to spend the whole day at skool?
Traffic is bad at 5pm
What about Daylight savings times? When time changes in fall, it's gonna be pretty dark outside when you get out of skool. And that would suck to leave skool when it's all dark... (especially high skool).

in my opinion, i think that it's better just to start early and leave as soon as possible.

I think starting at 10 A.M. and ending at 5:00 P.M. would not be too good because during the winter in northern parts of the U.S. the daylight is almost gone, so you wouldn't have any decent time outside to do anything at all. :(

It'll never happen. :(

My high school started at 7:30 and ended at 2:15. Six 1 hour classes, 30 minute lunch, 15 minute homeroom. Any class through 9:00 was a complete waste of time and spent instead on sleep. I work full-time now and get out of bed at 7:45. When I was in high school, I had to get up at 5:45. :disgust:

They couldn't make the start time later because of busing requirements for the middle and elementary schools. But even if that wasn't an issue, if they started class at 10:00 the school day would end at 4:45, which would not leave enough time for sports, activities or after-school jobs.

It's a tough problem to solve. Teenagers need lots of sleep and lots of time for school, activities, homework, jobs and fun. 24 hours just isn't enough to handle all of that. It would be better to have:

8 hours sleep
2 hours wake-up/shower/breakfast
7 hours school
3 hours sports/activities
1 hour dinner
4 hours job
4 hours homework
3 hours play/friends

Hmmm, that's 32 hours.

What are parents supposed to do with their kids when they head off to work at 8:00? As it is, they can just drop them off at the bus stop, or school. But, if it didn't start until 10:00, you'd have plenty of kids with problems getting to school. There are plenty of kids that are driven to school by there parents. Starting later would throw this all off whack.

And if mom and dad just left them at home and went to work, how many kids would be skipping school regularly?
