Would installing XP pro on a server be feasible?

I have a new Dell Poweredge 2650 rack server that came with RedHat Linux, but I dont intend on installing that. It's a dual processor xeon thats going to be used for the database that is accessed in the office that was previously running on a mac server.

What do you think?

XP Pro is limited to a maximum of 10 incoming concurrent connections.

Or any of the commercial databases (DB2, ORACLE, etc) that have native ports to Linux???

I'm going with Windows 2003 server enterprise edition.

This server will run a Filemaker Database for now, most likely to be web enabled.

Thanks for the input

May I suggest you look at Win2k3 Standard edition vs Enterprise edition. If you don't plan on making a huge cluster out of this then standard will do just fine and save you a bundle of money.

Definatly. Standard is more then capable for most uses. Compare.

One quick note, since I assume your not running MSSQL, since your DB was on a mac, then this point isnt much help, but MSSQL wont install on XP (It needs a server version of Windows). I think I might have heard of someone being able to get it to, but it took quite a bit of tweaking IIRC.

Actually SQL Server 2k will install on an XP machine. There is an edition called SQL Server Desktop edition that is a full-featured SQL version meant for developers to run on their desktops. It's still handicapped by the 10 concurrent connection of XP though. It's included on CD 2 of SQL Server 2k. Well at least it is with our Select agreement.

I think its fairly well known that window 2000 and XP are limited to 10 concurrent users but waht does this mean?

10 users logged in?
10 users accessing a share?
10 concurrent FTP sessions?
10 concurrent hits to the web server?

I searched the microsoft web without success.

Thanks,

David

Exactly what it says. IIS is limited to 10 concurrent connections (this applies to FTP and HTTP and SMTP). Only 10 other devices or users can access files from shares on the machine. Basically any kind of connection you can make to the machine is limited by 10.

If you use Win2k Server in Per Seat licensing the server can is not limited by any amount of connections. However you are still required to own a CAL for each device or user accessing the server. Check out Microsoft's Licensing Site for more information.
