Would I Really Have To???

I've been thinking about purchasing a SLK-900A Heatsink. I was wondering when I move my computer would I really have to take the Heatsink off and then move it? That sounds like a real pain for a good cooling solution. If I do would a mounted Heatsink be safer?

eh, i never removed my heatsink when i wen to lans and it was fine. just move your box carefully.

a bolt-on heatsink is always safer, though a pain in the ass to install. that's why i went with the 'a' model.

good luck.

depends on how big the heatsink is and the layout of your case, I guess.

personally, I've never removed my heatsink when moving my computer... and that's including trucking it back and forth to college a couple dozen times. never had a problem worth speaking of, but I was always sure to lay it flat.

I just bought a SLK 947U due to the same fears you have. I figured that i will deal with the installation hassel once, and get it over with. I only chose this path because ive seen what happens when a heavy heatsink breaks the ZIF socket clips. It basically breaks every component except the PSU and Optical drives due to its bouncing around in the car. Lucky it wasnt my computer - my friend was stupid and decided to save room in his trunk by placing his case in vertically...

So should I search the net for the more expensive SLK-900U heatsink and be safe or get the SLK-900A and just try and be extra careful?

I believe that is a decision you need to make for yourself.

what you need to do is make sure you bolt the hs to the board by ripping off the plastic thing (on p4 boards at least) and when you move it just put the case so that the hs is facing right side up and you'll be fine. i have a slk900u and have had no problems when transporting it.
