CPU: i7 920
Motherboard: Intel DX58SO
PSU: 650W

What I'm worried about is the motherboard. Got it back in '09 and I'm not quite sure how it'll handle this next generation video cards. Current plan is to pick up a 660 depending on price.

660 looks like the card for me too. You won't have a problem with new PCI-E 3.0 cards, they are all backwards compatible to the PCI-E 2.0 that your motherboard has. I don't think you will be bottlenecked by the CPU either, and the PSU should be plenty for one card.

Excellent! wasn't looking forward to having to replace the MB.

Follow up to this. Ordered my 660, now I'm wondering if I can keep my 260 in there as a PhyX card. Since both cards are double size, not sure if things would fit.

Expansion capabilities

One PCI Conventional* bus add-in card connectors (SMBus routed to PCI Conventional bus add-in card connector)
One primary PCI Express* 2.0 x16 (electrical x16) bus add-in card connector
One secondary PCI Express 2.0 x16 (electrical x16) bus add-in card connector
One PCI Express* 1.0a x16 (electrical x4) bus add-in card connector
