Would I be crazy for switching to Sprint?

I'm currently with Verizon, but not under contract. A friend who works at Sprint can get my wife and I a full data plan with plenty of minutes for $100/mo. That's actually way cheaper than our voice and text only plan through Verizon.

If I just get a BB Pearl or Curve, would it suck that bad?

My wife and I are on the sero plan, unlimited data/text and 1200 min or so I believe for $50 each a month, great deal compared to the prices of the data plans from other carriers or if you aren't getting the sero plan. We have the treo 755p, not the best or coolest phone out there but has web and full qwerty keyboard to make sure we use the data features. I guess it depends on the Sprint service in your area, we have good service in our area so we're happy and have saved quite a bit of money on this plan.

Go for it. Verizon isn't really worth the extra money IMO. I have a Curve on Sprint for my work phone, no problems.

The only two issues that I've had with Sprint have been coverage and customer service (more specifically, billing). If the coverage is good where you are, and you don't travel very much, then the coverage thing doesn't matter. As far as the customer service issue goes... well, you have a friend there who can hopefully help resolve any issues by giving you direct numbers to people who can actually fix your problem. The problems that we had with billing weren't too complex (ie. "I've never sent an SMS in my life, why are you billing me for $7.00 worth last month?") but the thing that drove to another carrier was getting them fixed because we'd be bounced from CSR rep to CSR rep until we got up high enough to have someone who can make billing changes.

I'd say go for it - and then return promptly during the evaluation period if you aren't happy with the coverage.

I've never had a problem with Sprint's customer service - just email them for everything. Calling is a disaster, and the stores are usually uber-crowded.

How long is the evaluation period?

It looks like 30 days:

But check with a rep before you commit to anything. I wouldn't want you upset with Sprint or myself because I found some random webpage on Google that was outdated and wrong.

That's kind of what I figured. I wouldn't need more than a few days anyway to evaluate my coverage at work, home etc. But I'll make sure of the time first.

Yes its 30 days - I just got my sprint phone in mid december and that's what they told me at the time. For what its worth, my main phone is T-Mobile - and while I haven't had serious issues with T-Mobile's coverage, Sprint's is actually a little better, so that's a positive.

sprint has had better coverage than alltel. there CS seems fine to me, their plans seem pretty good for what you can get, esp. with data. i am planning on upgrading to a smart phone by summer, possibly a pre.

Coverage depends on location. I travel quite a bit - California, Oregon, Ohio, Lousisana, Mississippi, Arizona, New York, and places in between. Sprint broadband coverage has always been great - most of the time EVDO Rev A and occasionally RTTx1 when near fringes. I also have AT&T 3G service, and it fills in where GSM is the mode (Europe, South Africa.)

In the US, as long as you are anywhere near an Interstate highway, Sprint rocks. Some suburban areas are weak.

If Sprint is 5x9 in your area - it's a great choice.
