Would HD4870 be capped on my system?

Check my sig for specs

I think I'm going to get some sticks of 2GB ram so I'd have 4GB of ram. The cpu is a bit slower than an E6750. I play games at 1280x1024 with no AA (but that might just be because I have an X850 Pro. My monitor supports up to 1600x1200).

Would the HD4870 be capped on my system, making it not worth getting the HD4870 over the HD4850? Or would it still be worth it to get the HD4870? I thought I might get the HD4870 since it would still have staying power for if/when I decide to upgrade when Nehalem is released.

I'm guessing since you have an x800 you keep em awhile so I say 4870 for sure and throw it in that Nehalem system.

No your CPU is still very good, and wont limit the 4870 very much if at all especially if you play mostly FPS

Actually I bought the 9800 Pro in July of 2004, and managed to sell it in July of 2006 and so I bought the X850 Pro used with the money I got from the sale. I suppose that is a while though.

But, the card managed to run most all games at highest settings, sans all the ps 3.0 effects of course ( :( ) up until now. It's a great card, but after being 4 generations behind, and not being able to play all the 360 ports like Assassin's Creed, it's time to move on.

Now I need to figure out how I'm going to justify paying $250 AR for an HD4870...I suppose it's not too much of a stretch. It's the same amount that I got the 9800 Pro for. But then again, HD4850s routinely sell for less than $150...this is a tough choice. I would guess that in a year 1/2 or so I could still an HD4850 this card for $75 shipped and then just upgrade again for another $75. It'd be like buying a game every year :D

Or I could buy an HD4850 now and buy another HD4850 when Nehalem comes out and get a crossfire mobo...but I could do the same thing with the HD4870...

Go for it, you'll see a HUGE increase over your X800 series card. Your cpu is more than adequate.
