There seemed to be a 50 year old man who had his car broken down today..it was down a twisty narrow road so he'd have to walk about 7 miles to get to any help. I was on the other side of the road when I passed him, but I don't really think I'd have done it anyway...maybe if it were at night and I was the only car passing through there, although that would've been much scarier.

So has anyone here ever picked up a hitchhiker? Or, would you? I think I can expect the typical response here ;)

When I was a kid, on a cross-country trip with the family, going up Mount Lassen, we picked up a hitchhiker with a huge backpack....he turned out to be a really nice guy, traveled with us for a couple days.

Nowadays, I wouldn't. The world's a different place.

It really depends on the area and who the person is. If it was some elderly man or woman, I guess i'd pick them up. Next time you hear from me, some 80 year old grandma will have jacked my car. :p

Probably wouldn't hurt to call the police as a non emergency. Just tell them what's up and see what they say.

Depends on their apperance, although looks are decieving, its all you have to go on.

I was going to pick up a really homely guy on the way to work yesterday, but he was a little.. uhh, too homely looking and he flipped me off when i got by him... so, f-that.

:p

I used to pick up hitch-hikers, but I don't feel safe dong it now. There is to much risk involved now.

Yep, used to, wouldn't now.

I would probably make an exception for middle-aged/elderly women; they are extremely unlikely to be dangerous. But I'd more likely stop and tell them through a partially open window that I'd make a phone call for them.

Sometimes you get lucky.....I was in a van with two other guys headed for Houston. Right outside St Louis we picked up a blond also headed for Houston. Fun time. Heh.

I used to hitch-hike frequently when I was in college. You all realize the hitch-hiker is also taking a chance getting in a car with some people. It goes both ways. I consider picking up hitch-hikers of any kind a personal charatible act, taking more courage than just dropping money in a collection plate. Who knows....you yourself may be stuck somewhere at night with a broken-down car. I'm sure your attitude would be more with the hitch-hiker then.

Here in Santa Cruz, A LOT OF HITCHHIKERS. Everywhere everyday. And in most cases no, I wouldn't. Sometimes they ask you to go to ridiculous places once they get in.

I'll give a hitchhiker a ride occasionally--once every year or two.

I figure it helps my karma, and is payback for when I used to drive crappy cars that would break down, and other people gave me rides.

I don't particularly think about the risk--I don't actually think the world is significantly more dangerous than it used ot be, only that we have access to much more information about how dangerous it is (and always has) been. I'm much more likely to consider how much crap I have on the front seat, and whether I'm willing to move it for this person.

Jam: It's a teenage girl walking along the side of the highway. I mean, they, they, they make scary movies that start out like that.
Trip: Hey, but, but they make porno movies that start out like that too, man.

When I was a kid, my parents picked up a hitchhiker and threw him in the back of the van with me and my brothers. He would sit in his seat and continually scratch himself while he was talking to my parents. We called him the wolfman because he was so hairy and kept scratching himself, it seemed like he would start howling at the moon at any moment. After that episode, my parents stopped picking up hitchhikers.

I used to pick up skaters in our radio station's logo van. Otherwise they'd just grab the back and go for a ride :p

the last time i did (many years ago) the hitchhiker stole some stuff from my car (and the hitchhiker was a "hot chick").

so, now i never pick 'em up, or hitchhike myself.
if someone were in trouble i'd call 911 for them.
