Would anyone actually buy one of these?

It actually isn't that bad of a deal for what you get. Alienware would probably want north of 3G's for something similar.

Agree! So why not get a desktop/tower for less money that you can add to or make changes? Notebooks are primarily for travelling - I don't think one can even open that monster on an airline traytable. 🙂

But the whole point of a laptop is to be able to bring it around. Now if you're not really going to move it why not just get a comparable if not better desktop for half that and maybe a cheap $600-700 laptop to bring around.

Like JeffreyLebowski said, lan parties. Also people who travel and want to game, and people in a dorm or studio apartment who want to be able to fold up their PC to get back the desk space.

I agree it's a niche product, I paid $700 for my July 2008 gaming upgrade (motherboard, E8400, 4 GB, 640GB HD, single ATI 4870). I sent the extra $1,500 off to my brokerage, d'oh.

I would never buy one, but I could see people buying those monsters for 1) lan parties; 2) all-inclusive desk machine; or 3) moved only around the home.

For me I'd say no. Not that its retarded though. Impratical is a better word. I got into the gaming laptops for a few years there but in recent years I found SFF rigs a better solution. Not as easy to transport as a laptop but they are typically cheaper and, more importantly, easier to upgrade and I can still transport them. This is the biggest problem with gaming laptops IMO. Upgrading. If you are a very well to do financial type person you could afford to buy a new laptop year to year but for most of us its just too expensive a proposition and buying a new gaming laptop every year is about the only way to keep it upgraded for the latest games. Also I find the 17" to be as big as I would like to carry around although i confess I havent owned one larger than 17". Business users will probably say 12"-15" is better. Of course everyone has their own opinion and this is just mine.
