Would an HD4850 512MB GDDR3 card be able to play any modern games?

Or is this card about as irrelevant as the X1950 Pro is today?

Thinking about getting rid of my GTX460 cards, after I found out what NV pulled in their recent drivers. Surely there should have been some notice about this stuff.

You could, would perform about like a 5750 in games. Expect less performance due to the GDDR3 memory and the 512MB of VRAM.

Should work good for medium settings.

1. I have the 4830 in my HTPC. It plays Portal 2 maxed out 1920x1080 and Call of Duty BO maxed out at 1600x1200. It struggle with stuff like Crysis unless the settings were rolled back. 4850 is a little better but it still a good card on medium settings/ lower resolutions on a lot of games out there.

2. Don't get rid of the GTX460.

I only upgraded to a GTX 460 from my 4850 512MB a few weeks ago.

It can play any game on the market. Some still at the highest or second highest settings (without AA), a few at medium and rarely low. SC2, for example, really stressed the 4850 at anything above medium (and even then it was stressed bad at times so I often played on low). I've seen benchmarks where the 8800GT is miles ahead of the 4850 in SC2 - SC2 hates the 4000 series.

I played BC2 at 1680x1050 Highest DX9 settings (no AA).

I'd imagine even BF3 will run on it on low settings, but I got rid of the card before the beta.

So it's not obsolete like the X1900 series.

The HD4850 is a couple of steps down from a single GTX460 and would be even further down from two of them in SLI.

What about the new Nvidia drivers are you worried about? If it is the secret user it installs, that can be prevented by removing the check box for the auto update option during the driver install.

It can still game at 900p/1050p/1080p @ low to medium settings. Its still a good card if you don't mind things being turned down a tad.

My biggest thing for gaming is simply being able to play at Native Resolution... after that, its all bonus

What did they pull? The updater account has been around for at least 4-6 months. It was such a concern you didnt even know it was there? Funny.

Anyways I have a 4850 running with an E8400 and it plays World of Tanks just fine.

We will see how it runs BF3 by the end of the month :D

It depends on the game, but in average it'll be fine for 1680x1050 or 1600x900 at Medium settings.

The HD 4850 has a 256-bit bus width compared to the 128-bit on the 5750. The HD 5750 has GDDR5, so they end up overall being comparable, with the 5750 being just a tiny bit faster. 512MB VRAM won't be a detriment for something like 1680x1050.
