Would adding a raptor make a noticeable performance increase?

I'm just wondering if I were to get a raptor, would it make a huge difference? If not, what is the bottleneck of my system? Also are the newer versions of these really loud? Thanks

I did not notice much of a difference and I consider it a mistake. The newer are not as loud as the first generation.

i went from a 5400 rpm 2mb hard drive to a 10,000 rpm WD raptor 8mb drive and noticed one hell of a differance in just about everything

I never went for a raptor since Ive heard horror stories as to how loud they are.
But I did get a 80gb Seagate 7200 SATA and I can tell you right off that thing respoded a hell of alot faster than the 80gb Maxtor 7200 ATA133 it replaced.

The only thing you'll notice a difference in is loading times. I have a raptor, but I got it when I built a whole new computer so I don't have anything good to compare it with. The people who tell you harddrive speed is the biggest bottleneck don't know anything about computers. The harddrive may be slow but the demand on it isn't that great. All a hard drive has to do is keep up with the loading into ram. Anytime you run a game while your actually playing the harddrive isn't doing much work since everythings already in ram; it's only when you first run the program that the hard drive really has to work.

harddrives are always bsystem bottlenecks. how much snappier your systemfeels depends on what you do

They are great drives, and fast. But to be honest, after owning a bunch (most recently two 74gb drives), I find it to be a huge waste of money if your on a budget. Its just too bad I had this revelation now after all the cash i dropped for them all. However, it all depends on your use for them. For my uses (games/apps/ftp server), I think they are a bit of an overkill IMHO.

Raptors have a poor price/performance ratio. About 33-75% more performance depening on task and cost 150% more money. With that said they are worth every red cent to me because load times are almost cut in half and I don't like looking at load times. YOU MUST GET THE 74 GB VERSION THOUGH. If you don't get a raptor I recommend Hitachi Deskstar for performance or Samsungs spinpoints for noise with middle of the road performance for 7200 rpm Satas.

I noticed it a huge difference in boot time and gaming from my 7200. My raptors are a lot noiser though...

Yeah, those are nice. But $80+ is a real drag.

I pay lots of money for no noise:) I'm obsessive about high piched noises. All CRT's make then to some degree even which I why I'm now an LCD fan dispite thier issues. Link for $70:)

I still haven't seen any good silent drive enclosures that work well for significantly less than that. I suppose the necessary density for the materials used in them is simply always going to cost a lot.
