Would a XP-M Barton be better than a XP Tbred?

I am looking at upgrading my AIW 9700pro to a X800xt or X850xt.

I'm wondering if upgrading my XP2100+ Tbred running at 2365 to a XP-M Barton (more L2 cache) would be worth it. Would a mobile running at the same speed or faster gain me that much that I would notice it in newer games?

Don't bother telling me upgrade the MB and CPU to a A64 or X2. I don't have the resources to do this and I'm trying to make this socket A setup last as long as I can. The best way for me to do this now is to upgrade my video.

Link for system specs.

TIA

barton has a little more cache, but you're not going to get much more overclock. i don't think it would be much, if any, increase.

or...you could just get like a X800GTO2 and unlock it, take the extra money and get your self a cheapo A64.

I really doubt it. After upgrading a 6800GT I did a reformat/reinstall. As usual, I pull back back on the OC of my mobile cpu when doing that. Well, I had it at 166 x 11 and forgot to go into BIOS and put it back to 215 x 11 and went about playing FarCry, D3 etc and didn't notice a difference.

So I doubt you'll notice any difference with a mobile and your chip @ 2365mhz.

How do you figure? X800GTO2's are going for $200 at newegg (OEM). You can't hardly find them used, and I would be forced to go PCI-E. I'm looking at prolly around $400 that route.

There's AGP versions of the X800XT and X850XT's going for about $250 used, and X800pros for less than $180.

That's what I figured. Good for me, I guess.

What video card did you upgrade from and was it a noticable difference?

Nice, another socket A user. I would not worry about that minor upgrade, your cpu will still hold it's own against the barton and even A64 setups. Funny thing is, my desktop Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ (2.2ghz) with a 6800GT matches my friends A64 3000+ venice @ 2.4ghz and X800xl in almost all games. I beat him by a few fps in some and he beats me by a few in others.

For gaming the biggest difference is still the GPU unless you are running an old celery or duron setup. This christmas I will finally retire my faithful barton and move it to a secondary machine. I has served me well.

The extra cache of a Barton over a Tbred does next to nothing for performance. Add to this the fact that even with the best overclocking mobile barton, you will get 2.6Ghz IF you are lucky. Most barely do 2.5.

If you have your mind set on getting a new gpu, I suggest you wait it out until you can afford both an Athlon 64 3000+, a motherboard, and a PCIe gpu such as the X800GTO2.

I upgraded from a 9800 Pro (OC'd to XT levels, actually a little faster than that). Yeah, I felt it was a big improvement. Better even than my previous two upgrades, Ti4200> 9600p > 9800p

My bad, didn't realize the AGP versions had drop that much, PCI-Es are still $300+

You might as well just stick with what you have until you can go for an Athlon 64 setup. The 2.1GHz XP is fine for just about anything.
