Would a wireless network effect gaming?

I am building a house and will have the opportunity to put in a wired LAN if I want to. I'm torn between doing a wired or wireless LAN. The only thing I pretty much do on the network at home would be gaming. Would a wireless network (I would go with 802.11g) effect my ping times in games? The g protocol is 54MB if I've heard right so I doubt it but I would want to make sure.

The devices I would have plugged in would be

PC
Second PC
PS2
XBox
Maybe a laptop in the future
Maybe an iPaq in the future

wireless will work fine for gaming, if it works at all. Most online games require a maximum of 128Kb of bandwidth, well under 802.11B's typical 1Mb. If the 802.11G is connecting reliably, you'll have no problems. I would put the server on a wired connection, though, If I planned a big LAN party🙂

As far as I understood it, going wireless added like 10ms to your ping. Is this any different with the new .11g standard? I don't see why it would be.

i wouldnt go wireless at all.

get wired, more reliable. pings and stability can be a big issue depending on where you are in the house.

I game and have a wireless router. My gaming rig is hard wired (Cat5 - 6inches cable) and I don't have any problems. I'm going to order a second USB 11b adapter. Once I get it I'll install it on my rig and try it out a couple times and report back for us all.

For now, just make sure your gaming rig is hard wired and no one on the LAN is taking up your upload bandwidth (Kazaa, etc.).

You don't know what you'll want to be doing 10 or 20 years from now. Do yourself a favor and get wired now, and leave yourself flexible to easily upgrade your wiring in the future. You can easily add wireless to a wired network. I bet a good wired setup would add to your house's value when/if you sell it too.

I have two wireless jumps from my computer to the internet (with wires in between those jumps). Ping times went up maybe 10 max. So, for Counter-Strike it's 30 versus 20. Can I tell the difference? No.
