Would a Vista upgrade let me upgrade HW at the same time?

I've been frustrated that I want to upgrade my computer MB/CPU, but don't want to re-install my applications/data, and that's apparently tricky at least if it'll work at all.

I'm wondering, if I upgrade to Vista from XP, can I do the HW upgrade and Vista install at the same time and have it do the conversions and keep the apps/data?

Think about it. You install an application on a OS. Then you change the OS.
You will have to re-install the applications.
Save your data to a dvd/CD/USB drive, etc. Then just do a clean install.

And by data, he means data, not programs. You can backup and reinstall, for example, Microsoft Office Word documents, but yoy can not reinstall Microsoft Office from a backup. If you could, Bill Gates would be broke!

Of course you can as long as your backup software is smart enough to include the registry information too.

you have to re install all your applications. since you are planning to upgrade your motherboard etc even XP might not boot due to license issues (OEM release). make sure you back all your data before upgrading.

Thanks for the bad news. (As for 'think about it', you don't need to put it that way, it's conceivable an OS *could* migrate apps).

I have the full install XP, not OEM; does that give me any options for doing what I want, since you say the issue is OEM related?

In the meantime, I'm getting a lot of mileage out of an old setup and might just build a new computer rather than upgrade... since I really don't want the hassles of the re-installs.
