No. Most people can hardly even notice them if all you're doing is talking to them. I've had mine pierced for years and some co-workers are still surprised to find that I have one (and yes, I work in an office).
The flesh-toned barbells are even less noticeable.
Agreed. I have a tongue ring and I work in an office. Most people don't even notice.

Double agreed. I work in IT at a law firm and I still get people that are suprised to see that I have one.

Oh and all that sh!t about a tounge ring meaning your gay is just BS. The ladys love it. 🙂

That's good to hear. I wasn't familiar with the word "umprofessional" until now, and now I know the definition of it.

Yes. Jewelry on males other than a wedding ring is unprofessional, IMO. Jewelry on females other than earrings (no more than three) is unprofessional also, IMO.

Agree, except females only get 2, one per earlobe.

On a guy, those earrings, piercings, tattoos and the rest will make you look not only unprofessional, but trash and an idiot.

I'd never hire such a characterr, except possibly for lifting or digging work.

:disgust:

Don't do it, if done take it off and hope it heals

I don't think it should but I do think it does. Looking professional is all about what others think and so to most people it would look unprofessional. I think its sad that a single tongue piercing could cost a person a job.

That being said I have my tongue pierced, I have worked in an office with outside clients. Most people don't notice it for quite a while when working with me. I am applying for law school, if I get in the tongue ring is coming out though, its not worth losing a job. I don't think I should have to but I'm not going to be the one that loses out by going against the grain.

It pretty much screams "shallow, trendy and immature". The only reason people do this stuff is for the attention - that's OK for a female, but really unbecoming for a male.

Ok, I'll bite. Let's hear some deep, heavy philosophical reasons for having a pierced tongue.

You better believe it.

Another one is tatoos that can be seen. Enjoy your blue collar job
Very true. Mine are well hidden when wearing business clothing.

wow...this thread kind of blew up.

The reason I was asking is that I am finally getting my tattoo done tomorrow and I was considering getting my tongue pierced while I was at it. I work in retail and a few of the other guys have theirs done. The ladies seem to like them, so I wanted to see you guys' opinion. I can usually count on women siding opposite of ATOT, so I think I will get it done.

Thanks for all the advice!

"Professional" is subjective.

Normally, I would agree with you, but if 95% of the population think it is umprofessional then it pretty much ceases to be subjective doesn't it?

I guess if I planned to work in retail for the rest of my life then I might paint myself up (actually, I can think of many retail stores that would pass you up for a job based on tats and/or piercings).

I hope you gave it at least that much thought prior to marking yourself up for life.

You left off the "Hell Yes" option on the poll. Tattoos that you can cover are one thing, but a tongue ring shows two things: rebellious nature (it's not exactly mainstream) and very poor judgment (some serious health issues). If those aren't unprofessional characteristics, I don't know what are.

Actually the tongue ring got trendy in 99-00. It's on the decline now though.

And the health issues are minor if you go to a reputable place and take care of it.

Unprofessional? Uh, yeah, for most professions. But if your wife and boss don't care, and your commissions don't suffer, go for it. It's not like you can't take it out later. If you are thinking of going white-collar in the future, you might consider not getting tattooed in places that aren't covered by normal business-type clothes.
