I have an Adaptec 2940 U2W (LVD capable) and I wa thinking about getting a 10,000 or 15,000rpm SCSI drive for it. Would my Adaptec card totall choke the drive ? I have a 120 gig SATA and a 80 GIG IDE, and they both are close in benchmarks, so I want something faster, but really don't want to spend the money on a new SCSI controller.

So the question is, with this card, will a new SCSI 10,000rpm or better (3.3-3.6ms access) be able to use some bandwidth ? ,or will the card kill it ?

i would be just about perfect for any "one" of the fastest scsi drives out right now
that card offers 80MB/s since it is U2W, which is slightly more than the fastest drives right now
storagereview.com show the Fujitsu Mas3735 getting 78.6MB/s

the only two situations i can see where the card might hold you back are burst reads from the cache(not a big deal really) and raid setups. Both of which are no big deal if you are just putting one drive in a system

just make sure you get a 68 pin drive or atleast a converter so it fits your card

Soulkeeper just posted what I was about to say, although I'd be very, very surprised if you actually got 78.6 MBps actual out of a card that promises 80 MBps theoretical max (unless there is absolutely no protocol overhead).

Thanks guys. My son put a nix on this, as he needs $1000 to go to Hawaii (with his H.S. choir) and wants a Radeon 9800 pro for Mine so he can have my 9700 pro when we play games (has a 9100 now).

Oh well, maybe this summer....... Thanks anyway...... Now I know for the summer..

I've got a 10krpm 18gig Atlas going for cheap if you'd like it. It's not much but it's good for OS and games.

An Ultra160 card runs $38 at Newegg, if you want to get a little more headroom. At that rate, burst rate from the SCSI bus to the PCI bus will be limited by the PCI bus at around 120MB/sec in real life: pic
