Would a public university know if you attended a private college?

I'm looking to transfer to a state college in california after not going to school for a year. I spent one semester at a private college and although I passed all my classes fine, I would rather just have a "clean slate" since I'm pursuing a differnt major now anyways. Is there any record of my having attended the private college that I should worry about the state school getting a hold of?

If you don't transfer any credits or records, then no, they won't know anything or care.

However, if you do have a good record, you are stupid for not transferring credits because it may save you a couple thousand dollars. Unless of course you lied and you bombed out, which isn't bad unless you lie about it ;)

What like drinking infractions? Everyone has a few of those. Isn't it like a standard graduation requirement that you get at least 3?

Seriously though, the classes I took there won't allow me to graduation any sooner and would only serve to possible lower my future gpa a little .

Hmmm...you didn't go to school for a year and when you did you had good grades. Now you want to start off "clean". That could only mean one thing. You were suspended for a year for some reason. If it wasn't for your grades it was for something! So what did you do?

Nah seriously I was not suspended -- I just wasn't enjoying school at the time and took a year off to pursue other interests.

Like I said, if you have nothing to hide, then transfer the credits. You'd be wasting money in the thousands if you didn't... for one you would have spent the money at the first school for nothing... and two you'll have to take some classes that credits could have transferred for at the new school.

Don't be a dumbass, transfer the credits.

Make sure the first class you sign up for is an English class.

Transfere credits never effect your GPA.

They can royally screw you if you hide it. I had a friend of a friend who went to pepperdine failed out then "started fresh" at SC two years later they found out and nixed his transcripts. What a waste of time and money.

No transfer credits will give you credit for courses but do not factor into your GPA, in fact I don't think they even record what grade you received in the class as long as you passed.

Transfer credits never affect your GPA. :D

Typically, transcripts from your school will list the number of transfer credits you have but will not list the individual classes or use them in the GPA calculation.

College applications usually REQUIRE that you send transcripts from ALL educational institutions you have attended. If they find out that you left them out, you could be in trouble.

So unless you are lying, there is no reason to leave them out and many reasons to include them.

That's correct, I work part-time for an academic department at my school, the grades might be recorded or archived somewhere, but in your official transcript, it only has like a 'T' for transfer.

Transfer credits do show by class and they do list your grades. Trust me, I have been through 2 CC's and 2 State U's.

Transfer your classes, even if they don't correspond to your current choice of degree having extra credits laying around is a great thing.

It varies from school to school on the grade transfer. The school I am at right now has them as either pass/fail and they don't count for you gpa.

Definitely check with the school. I know its a violation of honor code here at Virginia Tech--and is thus suspension-worthy (and it has indeed happened). They don't go LOOKING for the transcript--but stuff like that has a bad habit of turning up.

Unless you did something that got you kicked out of school, just transfer it. VERY few universities will transfer grades--unless its from a "sister" institution.... they'll just transfer credit for the classes (which is a "double edged sword" situation).

I would love to know what the justification was for such a ridiculous move. How in the world can they penalize you for that? I'm very, very skeptical.

I've also been through 2 CC's (one in Oregon, one in California) and 2 state universities(both in Oregon) and none of them used transfer credits in the calculation of your GPA.

And just how did they find out?

You're right. I just looked up my transcript online. It does show the grades of the classes that transfered but they didn't get added to my final GPA.
