would a p133 mhz laptop be sufficient for surfing the web?

if you can deal with OS lag.

I have a 533 mhz laptop with Win 98SE. the startup time is annoyingly slow, and it takes forever to open up any programs, but once open, I can surf the web reasonably enough.

one thing to be careful about, though... if the machine is old, you might also be looking at a failing hard drive, spotty monitor, and unreliable hardware.

It would satisfy, but the system may freeze from time to time depending on which content you will be browsing (java, shockwave)

only if you run some really old o/s on it like win98 or well linux i guess. more ram. old laptops... really old really slow hd's. if u can live with it.. sure.

The more ram, the better. 56megs will be pushing it. It'll probably be better under linux.

I have a P180 with 24mb of ram and it's pretty unbearable.

I had a similar machine, but the only things that bothered me were:

a) DSTN screen, = super ghosting, not that it matters for text viewing.
b) 256 Colors max, most website pictures are really dithered.
c) Lower 800x600 screen resolution, as opposed to 1024x768

If these 3 things don't bother you, it'll work great.

web use pc133 is fine as long as its better than 300mhz+p2, 400mhz+celly, 500mhz+k6, 450+k6-2, or 400+k6-3(all are pc66 or pc100). you should get good surfing speed. just make shure windows is clean and has all the updates.

I have a Compaq laptop with a P150 and 80MB RAM. I'm using 98lite and IE 5.5 and it's slow but definately useable.

no
have a Gateway Solo laptop 200 mx 32 Mb of ram .Surfing the internet on my office Broadband Was not tolerable ,Iam talking 4-8 seconds
opening a page. the is a vanilla install of Windows 98 .

I also have a gateway desktop Pentium 166mhz 64 ram and this too was not usable for web browsing (windows95 )

not-worth it,

I use to have a P100 with 32MB EDO RAM and a 1GB hard drive.
Surfed the internet fine with 95/98. Spent alot of time playing StarCraft on it too. 🙂
Connecting to the internet through a router made surfing very fast, probably slower (if even possible) if directly connecting.

I don't know why a P133 wouldn't be sufficient...

56 megs of ram is a lot for that old of hardware. You would be lucky to see most p 133 with more then 16 MB ram.

It'll be fine.

I still use my Toshiba 110CT (P100/40MB RAM/800MB HDD) occasionally for checking email, etc.

It's running Debian quite nicely, but win98 ran OK on it too.
