Hi

Guys I have an OC friendly 5900SE, it does 450/750, but due to its dx9 bug Ive been thinking about upgrading for some time now, but Im a bit short on cash right now so Im thinking about getting a 6200 for now, but I wonder if its gonna be an upgrade or a downgrade :)
can anyone answer this one ? cant find any tests of these two together online :(

please let me know

Thanks
Dan

P.S. yes I know a 6600gt would be the best choice here, but honestly I cant afford it right now :(

Stick with the 5900, honestly. You aren't going to see a whole lot of performance increase, and at least with the 5900 when you kick it back to dx8 or dx7 shaders you will see a big jump in performance.

Wait until you can get a 6600GT/7600GS at least.

My $.02.

the 6200 is the modern equivalent of the MX... sure, it might support all the modern features, but it doesn't have the horsepower to do anything with them. it'd be like having a full sized luxury car with massaging and air conditioned seats, burl walnut trim, and a 1 liter gas engine.

some farcry benches with the 5950
some farcry benches with the 6200
more farcry with the 6200

note that the 6200 is at best 2/3 the score of the 5950, and the 5950 test uses a much slower processor.

probably not worth getting it. a 6200 only has 4 pippes. you should get at least a 6600 non gt. 6600 non gt on ebay can be had buy it now for $60. i dont think 6200s are much cheaper maybe $10, so its not worth getting a 6200.

i'm assuming you are going agp though. so a 6600 agp might be a bit more.

i'd just wait until i could get something good agp.

There might be an AGP version of 7600GS sometime in the next few months - quite likely there will be as the market is still there for the card.

Well, it can play some games w/ DX9 alright, but at really low settings... Honestly, I can personally say that you should just stick w/ the 5900 in DX8 mode for now; wait till you can afford a better DX9 videocard (A 6600GT at least, I'd say)

I forgot to mention that in my testing in 3dMark2001 & 03, a 5900 @ 475/800 was basically the same as a 6600 @ 525/650, and a 6600 at those clocks is much faster than any 6200.

Save up for at least a 7600GS. The 6800GS isn't really worth it, because at its price level you could get a better-performing 7600GT (performs above 6800Ultrra level with no OCing) or an X1800GTO (slower than 7600GT without AA/AF on, but HIS and Connect3D models can be unlocked like the X800GTO^2s) and Unlock the latter to 16PPs.

I'd advise you to upgrade to pcie unless there is a good version of the 7600gs for agp.

The 6800gs agp uses an older core and is clocked slower than its pcie version. The agp 7800gs has 8 less pipes and is approx 25% slower clock speed. And both agp cards cost the same as their pcie versions.

Thanks guys, yep I'll wait

pci-e wont happen soon, Id have to upgrade everything to use pci-e and I definetly dont have the money for that

yes I know 7600s are better, but I havent seen an agp ver so far and even if it shows up Im worried it will cost too much, as agp cards are currently about 20-30% more than pci-e cards :(

Thanks
Dan

Sure 6200 might be "faster" in DX9 games. By faster it means it'll get 20 framerates vs. 10 framerates for 5900. It's not worth it to "upgrade" to 6200 card. I'd look at 6800nu AGP, X800GTO/XL for $160.
