Would a MMO racing game would succeed?

Hi,

I'm playing NFS:MW for about a week now. At start, I got the idea that is was not very dynamic game, now I still maintain that idea, but really the game seems to change whenever I get a new ride, so it't kind of a keep-going-and-going-and-going game. It's very nice. When I get tired, the game seems to bring something new to the table (new car, new cop tactics, new city zones, ...) which help me to keep my interest on.

Now about the subject topic, what about a MMO:NFS:MW game? eheh

I mean, a place where we can find lot's of other players, whe can race against and really earn/loose money in the races. My ideas from top of my head (caution: new ideas may arise :)):

1. I start a game with some startup money, loaned from some gang ... I have to pay it at certain periods of time, or they'll just jump over and kick my ride to trash :)

2. Many more cars selling, and all at their real price tag ... so if you want a Porche/Ferrari you'll really have to get the cash, through racing, loan from bank/gang, selling pinkslips you earn, ...

3. About the races: There are some pre-defined city circuits, similar to what we see at NFS:MW. The difference is that you sign in for a race, make your bet (you'll reject if you have your Fiat Punto race against Porches :)). This must be very well balanced ... maybe defining a level for each player, so a new player will be a low level one, and will only be able to race against low/mid level players. So a high level player with a very nice car and extras will never be able to join a low level race. This level should be based on his car stats. So I can even jump on my old Punto and do some low-level racing (if I'm interested, that is).

4. Setting up a race: A player starts a race setup, assigning it's startup fee (money and/or pinkslip). Every player can see what car he will be using and the price it will cost to race (or maybe he can see that his pinkslip will be on the bet). The winner will win every money everyone gave in. What about winning pinkslips? Well to avoid a 4-car racing and the winner earning 3 pinkslips, maybe the pinkslip will only be bettable on 1-on-1 racing ... 2 cars only, winner takes the other pinkslip.

5. Joining a race: A player can check a login screen where he can see the races for his level (the ones they can join), he can check the money he must pay to enter (it will be part of the winners prize), and the cars logged in for the race (player names, and cars they will race with).

6. Race Instances or NOT Instances: There are 2 modes for racing: Instance mode, where in MMO games will be the equivalent to having a self-contained circuit with traffic, police, etc. That way the players will be racing against each others and the environment. Now the other option would be NOT to instantiate the race ... so that other players in the city can cross/use the same spaces ... that would be great ... imagine racing against 3 other players for some money, and then BANG! other players that may not be racing at all, but just running from the police will just enter your street with 10 cops on their tails ... AWESOME! There may even be more than one race (but distinct ones) running on that same circuit ... so a low level race (with Puntos) may be crossed by some high level players (Porches) on the same circuit, but running different races at all.

7. Persuits: Cops will be permanently patroling the city, with some zones more havy on cops than others. Also if you don't pay a gang for the money they loaned to you, they may also be running for you ... bullets flying and all that ... cops may also chase them, it may endup being a hell of a persuit! So you may be just wandering around the city, not speeding at all, just showing your new Mustang aquisition, then you just come to a crossing street, where suddendly a bunch of cars cross your way like hell coming down! HEY! CAREFULL WITH MY PAINTJOB! eheh

8. Repairs: Every car will need some repairing. Ok, just let's not make it too realitic, or about 90% of the cars will never finish a race at all, but some basic repair would desirable, so you start to care about hitting a flat-wall at 300Km/h. Ouch!

9. Fuel: Enough said, you must pay for fuel, and for nitro recharge ... you must go to a fuel station to do the trick, and just take care of your heat before venturing to reach that fuel station ... you don't want to get the cops on your tail when you are going to get some fuel ... and just don't venture to a persuit if you have no fuel left ... that would give you a bad chance of running away ... :)

10. For all these features to take place, and to be a real Massive Multiplayer Game, the city would need to be big ... or maybe lot's of cities, joined by some highway (or you may want to avoid the highway at all, so some secondary roads would be great as well).

11. Objective: What would make a player run around? First, getting some money to buy that dream car. Second, being a #1 in the blacklist, based on the bounty. To keep at blacklist, you must keep visiting the game ... so new players will have a chance to get there, if #1 quits playing the game. Getting cought by the police will make you drop positions on the blacklist, and if the player is in the top 10 blacklist will see his capture being news of the day (all other players will be notified, as if it was a warning from the cop authority).

So these are my first thought ideas on a well deserved Massive Multiplayer Online Racing Game (MMORG). Looking at this NFS:MW just made me think that we may be almost there ... graphics and game style is there ... just make it multiplayer, with nice objectives, a bunch of cars and extras (exotic rides and more regular rides for the starters), and some mean to the money ... you race to win money, you may loose some at racing too ... just watch your back!

What you think? Would it work? Would you play it?

Post your ideas.

I cant believe people like NFSMW - There is no shallower, more unrealistic, plain old crapper series than this dross

yup it died.. great idea lousy product...
if they did it right where it was more like NFS underground where everyone moved about freely in 100% virtual cities and you could race for money or pinks etc it might have been better..

i love NFS undeground series and most wanted great fun

NFS Motor City? The only racing MMO I was aware of was Motor City Online which failed as well AFAIK. I remember it launched and they had a bunch of problems so they let people play for free and I remember playing around the time I got my ACt-labs wheel. It wasn't half bad but by no means great and NOT worth paying monthly for. I'd like to see a well-executed one some day, and not some stupid EA arcadey NFS rice.

And LOL to Seeruk, so true. I can't believe the popularity (judging by threads) of that crap!

But speaking of failed MMOs, who remembers World War 2 Online? Hahahha :D

Yeah I was stupid enough to try it out again... I mean in so many years surely there were some improvements right???

Wrong!

this would be awesome, i had this idea too and it would be cool if there were parts shops (ie aftermarket parts, turbos, body kits etc) that were priced in relation to the real world, and were updated from all the manufactures in the real world

example

HKS release a new air filter, said air filter appears in the shops on a MMO NFS,
Nissan Bring out a New Skyline, said skyline is available to buy from the car dealer
Greddy produce a new line of turbo's .... buy them in the game!

that would be awesome, would take constant work to maintain servers, update parts and cars, but id pay for it

Try $15 these days and that is nothing really if you look at what you get in return for the most part.

That's the cost of a movie ticket and some pop and popcorn.

If you don't like it then don't play. :D

It's still fun, to a point. I like the fact that you can buy a car, make it your own, and just drive it around town if you so desire. Of course, I stopped playing at Blacklist number 4 because of the requirement that you orchestrate epic police chases on top of winning races, which is extremely frustrating to do.
