Would a faulty memory controller cause RAM errors?

I just setup a Abit NF7-M motherboard with some Corsair value select ram (2-512MB sticks) and after getting a couple of blue screens while installing XP I tested the RAM with memtest86. After 6 loops I found a couple of errors. I then tested each stick by themself and it seemed like only 1 came up with errors. I tried another program called Hot CPU tester which allows you to burn in/test the RAM and doing this on each stick it produces errors. It just seems kind of odd that 2 brand new sticks of Corsair RAM would be bad so I was wondering if it could be the controller? I'll have to borrow some RAM to try out in this board to see if I can verify it really being the sticks. Thanks for any feedback.

Could be!!! The fact that memtest which I trust more didn't show memory errors on the one stick makes me think you just got one bad stick!! I wouldn't trust the Hot cputester cause it has other variables in play...Memtest is isolated to the memory...

Also try making sure you have setting to normal or safe, not agressive at all...Set cas settings to normal and spd....Some boards have compatability issues with certain memory chips...may look for a bios update or have to drop cas timings to below specs....

Could be several things at this point, but the possibility is alwways there...

try each stick for a couple of passes of memtest86 in each slot that you would normally use. If one stick consistently errors, even only one or two, and the other does not, regardless of position, you have a bad stick of ram.

Thanks for the feedback 🙂

I am going to flash the BIOS in a little while, a little hesitant with all memory problems I am getting...

I ran memtest with each stick 1 at a time and after about 7 passes each I don't get errors. I ran memtest with both sticks in overnight and afer 10 passes I have a whopping 64 errors! The thing with running 1 stick with no errors is when I boot into Windows I get screen corruption and since this board has onboard video and loads of errors in dual channel mode I am thinking it's the memory controller, but I just didn't know if that would produce memory errors.

BTW, no overclocking, RAM timings default & no overheating. I guess after I flash the BIOS I'll try RAM from another computer in there.
