Would a dual-Opteron rig be a good gaming system?

Just curious, if you had money to blow on an elite gaming system, would dual-core, dual Opterons be the ticket? Or is that more for server-type stuff?

If games were CPU limited at all then maybe, but it'd be the last thing i upgrade to.

It's overkill for gaming since most gaming made on single CPU in mind. Unless you were thinking of doing multiple things in the background now that's a different story.

If you want to run two instances of FEAR one two seperate monitors, while encoding three dvd's in the background, and you have 2 1900xtx's, each with two monitors hooked up, it MIGHT be worth it.

What are you guys talking about!?!?

Opty 165+Overclock+New HS=1337 computer on the cheap

Same goes for single core:
Opty 148+Overclock+New HS=Pretty dam fast computer

Edit: Instead of blowing the money on a FX-60 or something like that, I would save money and still be able to hit FX-60 speeds.

He's talking about dual-socket opterons, for which you need socket 940's, and 2xx series cores.

If you're blowing money, the FX60 is perfect. If you want the same performance, OC an opteron. They are more reliable silicon, so you get good OCs out of them, and having dual core is just a way to be ready for the (near) future. as multitasking is something everyone does, and even games are starting to get dual core patches, etc.

Oh, in that case then no, thats more sever type stuff or workstation type stuff.

For gaming go socket 939 and get either of the Opterons I listed earlier.
