Would a ATI Radeon 9600 be enough to drive a 23" Apple Cinema Display

You guys think I will get by with that video card? Their upgrades to a better video card are insanely expensive..

As long as that card & the drivers support the native resolution for the cinema display you will be fine in windows, and apps...but dont bet on getting any good FPS in games with that monitors native resolution and a 9600. I havent actually used one, but i am better that the 9600 wouldnt even play newer games at 1920 x 1200 (the Apple 23" native res) even with the effects turned down.

On the other hand, if you dont play many games, or dont play games at all, you will be fine. Just check the maximum native res your 9600 supports, and check if you have a DVI port. No point having a nice screen and a crummy picture.

I thought you needed 2 DVI connections to power the cinema display? I remember seeing a power adapter for PCs to be able to run the cinema monitor.

Yeah, as far as I know the display itself requires DVI-Dual-Link (DVI-DL) connections, and I don't think the 9600 Pro will do this.

I may be utterly and hopelessly wrong, however.

If you're referring to this card:
"ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Edition: One Card for All"
http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2502
then yes, it should work fine for video editing.
Only the 30" Cinema Display requires a dual-link DVI port.
The 23" only needs a single-link DVI port.
This card includes one of each type of DVI port.

Yes it will work:
The 30" cinema display requires dual-link dvi, only a few high end cards have that feature. The 23" cinema display can be run by any video card, including yours. Just don't plan on playing games with a 9600.

only the 30" apple lcd requires dual-link dvi. if you guys ever plan to get it, any 7800 series card supports dual-link.

I'm running my Dell 2405FPW on a Radeon 9200, it does 1920x1200 just fine. I have also achieved that resolution on a Radeon 7500 PCI (AIW VE).

It's apparent he's alluding/referring to a Power Mac G5. Few of you are considering the subtitle where he states he's interested in video editing. The Radeon 9600 is adequate for iMovie and Final Cut Express, but relatively underpowered for Final Cut Pro.

It's rumored new Power Macs will be announced on Wednesday. Any decision should be deferred for another week.

Now this is the advice I was looking for ;)

The Dell 24" is better than the Apple 23"?

Have you ever seen the Apple 23."

It is too sexy for words.

It is like comparing Anna Kournikova to a las vegas call girl.

The call girl might perform better, and be a hell of a lot cheaper, but Anna will look a lot better doing it ;)

The Dell 2405FPW uses a Samsung panel, while the Apple 23" Cinema and the HP L2335 use an LG/Phillips SIPS panel, like the Dell 2005FPW:

For a little while I used a Radeon 9600 Pro to run dual monitors which included my HP L2335 and it was fine for everything but games. And don't listen to the Dell folks, if you read sm8000's link on the HP L2335 review, the LG/Phillips SIPS panel is better than what the Dell 2405FPW's, even for gaming.

Yeah it is definately more than adequate for my needs.

I'm actually going to hook my Athlon x2 based system up to it as well with a dvi switch so I can switch between the two computers with the push of a button.

The Apple computers and display I plan to buy through the school. I get a really good deal on both, plus the three year Apple Care warranty if anything goes wrong.

Then instead of talking to someone in India when my monitor breaks, or more likely I break it, I take it on a five minute walk to the bookstore I bought it from and have them send it out for a repair ;)

That was indeed an interesting review.

Perhaps I will consider that HP display if my distributor sells it.

Frankly, I'll take any high quality LCD display that does not say Dell on it.

I have a rather unhealthy, unrelenting hatred all of all things Dell ;)

edit: a grammer checker along with that spell checker would be another damned cool addition to this forum. I hate grammar ;)

No, that is only for the 30".

Yes, we established this a couple of days ago. :)
