Would a A64 3000+ be a huge upgrade over a P4 2.4B

This system is strictly for games. From what I've been reading it seems like I am processor limited in games like UT2004, escpecially in onslaught. Would upgrading my processor bring my minimums up? Right now I drop into the low 20s frequently on certain maps.

One more question would going up to the 3200+ be worth the roughly $50.00 extra dollars?

y dont you just try overclocking your system first. i'm sure you can get to 3.2GHz with proper cooling. otherwise, the athlon 64 is an excellent choice. is it worth the extra $50? no. its abouy 5-10% faster hten the 3000+.

You'd be hard-pressed to get a B-stepping P4 to 3Ghz.

Not saying it isn't possible - but it might not be possible with a sane level of noise.

Buy the 3000+ and overclock it to 2.3-2.4 GHz. Then you'll be screaming ^^

Problem is you need a whole new system from ram, better video card, mobo, HSF, prcessor etc which will total out around $800..

I figured around $350 and just keep my current video card for a little while longer.

Thats still alot of money if its not gonna be a pretty big change.

The A64 3000+ would for sure help your games, even more if you overclock it, but most likely not a huge fps gain. I noticed a fair jump in game performance over my XP 2100+ I have running at 2400mhz when moving over to my A64 3000+ running 2.5ghz. However, I am guessing you'd see a much larger increase if you took that $350 and picked up a 6800 GT. Although, you could run your current PC2700 just fine with the A64 until you wanted to upgrade it later as there is little performance hit from running the HTT and Ram async using the memory divider. That would be a cheaper upgrade.

Here's an article comparing the A64 to a couple PIVs, including some good gaming benchies. Unfortunately there is no 2.4B tested, but if you know how it compares to a 3.2C then you're in luck. A little digging will turn up better comparisons I'm sure.

My guess is the A64 3000+ would be 25% faster (3000+ /2.4GHz). Not sure the cost/benefit works out at stock speeds. If you overclock, though -- and I would expect around 2.2-2.4 GHz from what I've seen -- it looks much more attractive.
