Would a 6600GT AGP be better buy over 6800?

My friend is having me build his computer and tells me he wants a 6600GT but I recommended to him a 6800 (it could be found for 250 + tax + s&h). He still is set on getting a 6600GT AGP but I don't know. What are your takes on this predicament? Will a 6600GT AGP last my friend 2 years with today's current games or should a 6800OC be fine.

I mean I have a 6600GT AGP and a 6800OC and both are about the same in terms of gaming except that when you turn on AA & AF the 6600GT AGP loses some ground.

I don't know if this would help, but my friend's monitor goes only up to 1280x1024 resolution so non of those 6800GT's should apply here.

The 6600GT is no slouch. To give you an idea, even a FX5900 will play any game on the market today just fine (er... limited to 1024 x 768, no AA/AF if you want it smooth)

The 6600GT will do better than a FX5900, but of course, a 6800GT will blow it away.

PS: Best of luck finding a 6800GT for $250.00. You're going to have to add about $100 to that unless you find some bottom dweller brand. But then the hardware isn't going to last 2 years... so the longevity question would be moot.

I say just stick with the 6600GT. Mainly because it's your friends system and not yours, and he should get whatever he wants. Besides the difference of those card are not too much, it's not like a 9600pro vs x800.
Try once more to push the 6800, but if he still want the 6600GT just let him have it.

By getting him the 6600GT if something goes wrong it's not your fault.

Please list the specifications of the computer you are building.

If the specifications are high end, perhaps a 6800 is a better buy.

If they are mid-range, a 6600gt might be the better buy.

His computer is almost similar to mine, hence I urged him to get a 6800.

Here it is:

P4 2.8GHz 800FSB
120 GB MAXTOR HDD
512MB PC 3200
ASUS P4P800S mobo
350W PSU
5 80mm fans, 2 120mm fans
either a 6600GT AGP or 6800

Hope that helps, Gentle. Thanks again guys.

So, how much did you spend on his new rig so far?

It depends what he's used to. For me, a 6600GT won't even play today's game at an acceptable rate. But I know people playing HL2 on a GeForce4 MX and they're happy with it for now, so surely a 6600GT would last them a couple years.

The big difference I'd say will be what res he wants to game at. For 1280x1024, the cards are very close; with AA/AF making it go for the 6800. Below 1280x1024, the 6600GT is a clear winner. You've also got to realize that you can get the 6600GT for ~$200 shipped online, you're talking about paying $250+tax ($15-$20)+shipping($5?) = closer to $275. Have him weigh the cost versus the resolution

He was referring to the 6800OC, not the 6800GT.
