Would a 256MB 7600GT be much better than an 128 MB X800SE?

Hey, I was thinking about getting a newer video card to replace my X800SE that I got in my Dell. Yeah, SE, 8 pipelines, they crippled it. Haven't found any benchmarks but wondered if anyone had experience with both and thought upgrading to the latter would make things better at 1280x1024.

There aren't, if you want 256-bit you need to step up into the 7800 series. The mem is clocked plenty fast though, it won't even be an issue at 12x10 until you turn on some heavy AA/AF, but that can be said of any card in your price range.

X850XT, 256MB and 256-bit. Plus $15 cheaper.

the x850XT is on par with the 7600GT. the 7600 does *slightly* better in ceratin instances (rapes it in openGL of course), and also has SM3 support.

with 7600GT prices coming down, i would definitely get one or an X1800GTO if they've come down in price

gpu review has an entry for an 8 pipe 256MB x800se, which seems to have a large pixel fill rate advantage and a slight memory bandwidth advantage over the 7600GT, while the GT has a very large shader and texture fill rate advantage.

i'd say it'd bench somewhere between a vanilla x800 and an x700 pro. on tom's vga charts we'll split the difference and call it 62 fps. the 7600T is doing 94 fps, or 33% better.

Nah, I'm gonna go with the 7600GT. Reasons: X850XT is supposedly louder than ALL GET OUT, and is not just a "stick it in and go" kind of thing, i.e. there's a lot to worry about. I think 7600GT will be just fine.

7600gt is noisy, too. but you can throttle the fan speeds using Rivatuner without it getting too hot.

Ah, hadn't heard that, thanks. I'm assuming it's not quite as bad, literally like a jet taking off in the next room from what I hear of the X850XTs.

I have three 7600GT cards and one of them is definately louder than the other. Check out the pictures before purchasing - if the fan looks like a blower then it will be loud. If it looks like a regular axial fan, then it will be reasonable.
