I'm 5' 9", about 145lbs, would doing 30 sit ups in the morning and 30 at night do anything? If so, after how long?
Been about the same weight for a couple of years or so (I'm 16), walk to school and back (15 mins each way).
Just wondering if this alone would give any tangiable benifits?

Start with 50 and slowly increase by 10 every week. That's how I did it till I reached 1000 a day (100 in intervals of one hour). I did not get a perfect six pack though. :(

Ruin your back? ;) Our PE teacher told us never to do sit-ups though, he says they're bad for your back...we do crunches instead.

Crunches? Sit-ups? Whats the difference exactly? I should try to get a sixpack sometime, I've gained 14 pounds since I started to work out. Just gotta figure how to get my abs in shape.

yup, you'll start to see a tangible difference after about 2 months, and it ain't gonna come easy. But the point is to stick to it. Not having a six pack is caused by fat that needs to be melted away by cardio, not by building up muscles underneathe like situps.

Yup. Doing the situps will not give you the results you desire easily. You need to drop your body fat to lose your belly. Running is a great way.

Just a question, how far?? Is it a matter of distance or speed if you're just looking to reduce fat???

YOu were overtraining. It is better to do 3 sets of 20 crunches done slowly correctly and concentrated than hundreds or even thousands of situps. Most professinals will tell you toned abs need you to get rid of the layer of fat that covers them. Therefore work first on reducing your gut by doing cardio, then on toning by doing ab exercises. As often in life, less can be more. Also It is better to train hard for say half an hour every second day, than a bit in the morning and evening of every day. The reason is abs like every muscle need some time to repair themselves.

Good luck.

for fat loss, afaik a combination of sprinting then jogging then sprinting etc. works best.

Therefore activites such as basketball are great at achieving such an effect.

It usually causes me to fart. That's why I can't get anyone to hold my feet down for me when I do sit ups.:(

Distance over sprints. 30-45min a day for 3x+ a week should take care of ya :)

Good question. I think you need to do a minimum of 15 minutes of running, three times per week. That's around 2 miles for me.

you need to gradually increase your sit ups... doing only 30 at a time twice wont do much... i used to do 250 crunches every day.

How about 30 mins running 3x a week, 30 mins cycling 3x and 100 sit-ups a day? Would that be better?

I didn't mean for him to do that immediately but to work up to that. But he sounds somewhat active....

See a surgeon.

Spot reduction is a myth that for some reason just _will not die_. If you have too much fat around your chin you either have to reduce the fat or increase muscle so much in that area that the entire area is tightened. The latter option is not feasible for chin fat, so you need to either reduce overall body fat, which will pull fat from your chin, or see a plastic surgeon and he can do lyposuction or something similar.
How about 30 mins running 3x a week, 30 mins cycling 3x and 100 sit-ups a day? Would that be better?
As others mentioned below one's ability to see their midsection is almost entirely a product of their bodyfat levels. Nobody on this planet has ever seen a fat person with good abs because it's impossible. Since spot reduction is impossible the only way to reduce fat around the midsection is with either a surgeon or by lowering the body's overall bodyfat. Then, the tone on one's midsection is determined by the ratio of their muscle mass in that region to their bodyfat.

Most people have decent abs - especially if they do other activities. Not to say that working abs is a useless waste of time, but if your only goal is to see your abs 95% of your energy should be put towards lowering bodyfat. Those 100 situps won't hurt but as far as I'm concerned they won't do much. In terms of losing bodyfat basically the more cardio the better. So yes all of that stuff will be better. You need to lose serious bodyfat to see abs regardless of how much muscle you have under there!

There's a guy at my work who does 300 situps before work and 300 after work. I want to say that I've never seen abs like that on a guy, but he's gay and I'm not so I'm not going to give anyone anything to make jokes about.

;)
