Would 2 mason jars with water and 2 siphons continue forever *pic included

No, but two magnets can make a wheel spin forever.

edit: it's not that we should discourage curiosity...but when a simple, obvious source like Wikipedia can answer these kinds of questions...well, maybe check it before you ask the questions out loud...

I'm sure all you'd need is a good source of zero point energy.

Or a portal gun.

no but could you imagine what would happen if you used some sort of heat exchange device to heat the water, use instead of a siphon, a hood to catch the steam, run a rubber hose from there to the lid of the second jar, and viola, use the heated water vapor to do whatever you want with, like maybe, spin a turbine or something...

Yes, but only if the water was at the same level, the siphons both were at the same height, the entire system was frictionless, it was in a vacuum, and it was all at absolute zero.

Erm...

Assuming for a second that could be done; would that meet the definition of a perpetual motion machine? IOW, could that be construed as mechanical?

If one would change the shape of the jars and add a heating and cooling element to one of them it could work. :p

It would be perpetual motion, AFAIK. A siphon involves atmospheric pressure, but per the engineering schematic above, it would have a balanced input. So no energy in, which means no work will be done.

Patent it. You can sue another company for using water in their product and make millions. It will work, trust me, it's the US patent system.

hmm... that could actually work. i hope it's patentable.

Put them both in a pressure vessel, and fill them with liquid helium. :awe:

Preferably, both will be Klein bottles.

One professor I had put one of the bobbing birds on the desk and asked how it worked and if it might be used to generate electricity if large enough on a test. Seriously, only questions for a PhD candidate class.

Too late! I already have the patent for "All systems consisting of one or more containers filled or not filled with fluid which moves the fluid from one container to the other or does not move the fluid from one container to the other for the purposes of creating limitless energy or any other purpose or no purpose at all."

I'm off to sue everyone in the world now.
