Hail Blaster

At the 2005 Tulare Farm Show Expo I found a company based in Mexico that designed a system that prevents a thunderstorm from dropping hail. It is used by farmers and even automobile manufactures with huge inventories parked near by. The system will protect up to a 1 kilometer radius from the machine and 3 kilometers at 50,000 above the ground.

This system employs a large megaphone (30 feet high and 10 feet diameter, pictured below) tube by sending a blast upwards. A large amount of energy is released which creates a pressure pulse up to 50,000 feet. They inject a quantity of acetylene into the bottom of the megaphone and with ignition a loud blast occurs. This can be heard over 5 miles away and around the expo for sure. The interesting thing is, it creates a large quantity of negative ions that take the positive dust particles to neutral balance. Then the hail will not form. Real interesting system, but I have a interest in finding how negative ions are created with a swirling high energy air blast.
