worthy sound card?

really, cause I wanted to get a X-Fi Fatal1ty, but since vista was not going to support EAX I decided to forget about it

i'm one of the x-meridian's biggest fans, and i disagree with recommending it for you. it's expensive, and OpenAL support doesn't exist. OpenAL aside, as a SB altenative i suggest the Xplosion. newgg has it for almost $20 less than your pick, it has digital outputs, and far superior analog sound quality.

is the explosion really good, I am always open to alternatives, I have used nforce onboard sound for the last 5 years, but i am wanting to use pci sound card again

That was $50 after google checkout last week. Wait for another deal to come along if that's the price you'd be getting.

If you want the higher EAX levels, Creative is the only game in town.

I would say a good starting point would be to spend as much on headphones as the soundcard. For speakers, a starting budget might be twice what you spend on the soundcard.

I will check that out, yeah I have decent 5.1 speakers they are a few years old but they were good when I bought them, plus I have Bose noise cancellation head phones that are pretty sweet if you ask me
