Im wondering if its time to upgrade?

Current Specs:
e6750
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
8GB PC2-6400
PC P&C 750W
Antec 900
8800GT

Its been a good stable system, just looking to give it a tad more juice. I prefer Nvidia, I don?t overclock, and looking in the sub-$180 range. Just a quick scan of NewEgg returns various versions of the GTX260.

Not a hardcore gamer, and I do tend to play a number of older games from time to time. Most demanding games would be Fallout3 and GTA4(unplayed as of yet).

So is going to a GTX260 going to be worth the time and $$$ or should I stick with what I got and wait for something like the 280's to fall in price? Or is there some other card I should look into?

What is your resolution/monitor size?

That can be a very nice upgrade in some cases.

GTX 285 will not fall in price, until the next generation of cards will be released, since it has no single GPU competitor where it is situated.

So, you can either wait for the next generation, which is somewhere between July for ATI, probably October for Nvidia ( just rumors anyway ), or you can grab that sweet GTX 260 and max out those games. Well, except GTA4 who needs 2 gb of video ram. :) Either way, gtx 260 is a lot faster then your GT, so I'd say it totally worth the time and money.

Dell 2005WFP.

20" Wide, Im not directly in front of it but I believe its 1680x1050.

Given the responses guess its time to start shopping! One other quick quick question is there a noticable difference between the 192 core and the 216 core versions that I am seeing?

For a 20inch monitor, the GTX 260 would be useful if you run quality and eye-candy maxed out or for games like Crysis.

Personally, I would say get a nice 22inch LCD on sale, and get a 4850 or similar GPU.

Get the 216 version, it's a bit faster, for just a couple of dollars more, I guess.

That'd be like taking two nearly sideways steps, unless you meant a 1080p 22". Most 22" monitors are the same resolution as his 20", and a 4850 wouldn't be much faster than an 8800GT.

I went from an 8800GT to a GTX260 EVGA card about 4 or 5 months ago, 22" LCD running at 1680x1050, and the difference was pretty huge in games like Left4Dead and Crysis. I think it'll depend on what you play, but for first person shooters, it was very noticeable.

Yeah, is like upgrading to a 9800GTX+, not enough of a difference, better off with a GTX 260+ 216 or the similar HD 4870 1GB both are similar.

I used to have P35C-DS3R with E6750 4g ram with 8800gt, upgraded to 9800gtx, wow showed no difference while devil may cry 4 was about 20% faster with same setting, then i used evga step up to 260gtx and saw a lot of improvement in dmc4 compared to 9800gtx (but with 8gb ram even tho i dun think it helped in fps) so i think it is worth it, i play at 1920x1200 resolution. no big difference in bioshock between 9800gtx and gtx260 in my eyes, maybe in some benchmarks tho

do you play COD4 or COD:World at War? I'm really curious what the 260 does at 1920 x 1200.

There a few games like Dead Space, Call of Duty 5 and Brothers in Arms, the 9800GTX+ tied or ran close against the HD 4870 and the GTX 260+, but in other games it was between 30% and even two three times slower specially in high resolution. Eventually in newer games, that performance difference will be more pronounced.

GTA4 for PC is fine, people just like to bitch. I played it on an e5200 + 9600 GSO(both heavily OCed) and it ran acceptably at 1280 with few noticeable problems. I'm sure it will run beautifully on a c2q + 260.

I went from 8800gt to 4850 and now to a 260gtx 216 and damn the difference is huge. I game on a 32inch 1080p tv and now I can run far cry 2 with 4xaa on whereas before I would fill up the mem.
