I know I keep on saying I will be getting my new CPU soon but now I actually have the money to do it right now. But I know conroe will be coming out in around 6 months. should I wait 6 months for conroe or go ahead and get an opty?

Id wait since it will probably be less than 4 months. If nothing else youll be able to get an opty for dirt cheap ;-)

Is your mobo 939 or 754? If you want dual core now you can sell your chip for decent money and pick up an Opteron 165 for a small amount.

Otherwise I'd just wait for Conroe, as prices should be cheaper across the board.

I'm in the same boat, my current system is a few years old and I really want to upgrade. Usually I fully support the "If you wait for new technology, you'll always be waiting" train of thought, but with AM2 and Conroe only a few months away, I think it IS a good time to wait to see performance and prices. And if it turns out you don't want to upgrade at that time, the prices of 939/X2 will probably drop, which is good.

The last time I checked there weren't any 3500+ or SLI Mobos on Socket 754....

While it is true it's not everyday that a new CPU architecture like Conroe comes out, the CPU world works very differently then the GPU World's shift in architecture every 1yr to 18 months vs 3-6 Years on the CPU Side of things.

I never wait when I have the urge....

Your call but what if in 6 months either Conroe results are not as good as the arse kissing AT review (which their recent review of the XE also sucked) or AMD paper lauches something that seem like a winner...Will you wait then???

I say get what you want now and never wait for the technology sector..They will screw you with obsolesence in the short term anyways...The way Intel changes chipsets like underwear nothing you buy now or then likely will last long anyways....

I so this only if you want to mess with DC...Just upgrading to get a faster single core would be kind of anti-climatic...

Why wait for Conroe 65nm? Why wait for AMD Brisban? Why wait for Conroe 45nm? Why wait for AMD K8L? Why wait for K10? It's endless dude.

LOL - AMD should do same thing in 6 months. Wonder if anand would advertise it like he has PentiumM, Yonah and now Conroe? In reading the various reviews over the years I don't think he's a fanboy but more desperate for Intel to give something - anything, read the Yonah review, he actually sounds upset a bit it could'nt beat X2.

Anand is happy that Intel is being more open then it has ever been about its road map. It's a editors paradise. As much as it is a ploy by Intel to undercut the market, Anand has almost a duty (and a particular pleasure) of reporting the news.

And for the original post....I think your processor is about as good as it gets for gaming besides a 1000 dollar FX. The best thing you can possible do right now is invest in a solid X2 AMD and hope for a good over clock.

I also agree with Duvie. When I have the urge, nothing really stopping me from upgrading. Especially a processor that's not due out for months down the road .

I'd say it depends. If you plan on upgrading and not touching your system again for a while, then waiting is probably worth it. Of course, remember that you'll need new ram and a new motherboard for either Conroe or AM2, so just getting a $280 X2 may be the better choice in the end... and you'd get instant gratification.

Exactly right...going Conroe might not be such a good move in your situation (unless you have plenty of cash). Upgrading your whole system with merely a new chip (Opty or X2) would probably be the smartest move IMHO. There's also the point that we still have no idea what availability will be like when it's released...remember when the Prescott was released, not even Dell could get them for the first 3 months.

If you can save your money for a whole quarter then you'll probably be looking at a host of opportunities between conroe's release and AMD's answering technologies (price cuts I'm betting on). Money has a way of disappearing if you wait, however, and I find the saying "get what you need when you need it" most accurate in the technology sector.

If you want a dual-core, then go for it now.

If not, then there's be no point in switching CPUs.

Isn't conroe out in late june, rather than this 'mysterious' 6 months everyone is throwing about? ;)

Nah don't wait.

Conroe is just a big conspiracy. It's actually no faster or cooler than Prescott. :D

i heard a rumour intel kidnapped Anand and replaced him with a robot that posted those benchmarks, and that intel found a few warehouses full of williamette cores they had forgotten about that they need to get rid of...so conroe was born!

No...

Edit: We'll probably see early previews from websites in the June/July timeframe though. The first 3 iterations of Conroe are due in late Q3 (Jul-Sept), but the most recent word I've heard (keep in mind that this is rumours from Intel employees) is that Intel will be taking their time on the ramp. That means that (just like we saw with Prescott) there will be a limited supply until late in the year.

So will I get more of an increase if I get another 7800gt than getting an opty? What about getting 2gb of ram?

your computer is fine. just wait until conroe or something. you dont really even have much of a reason to upgrade now if its just gaming. that computer if your is still mid-high end.
