Worth waiting for Black Friday for an HDTV this year?

I know it's early, but curious if anyone has any insights or guesses yet as to whether the holiday shopping season will be worth waiting for this year? Our primary TV, a 6 yr old 32" Toshiba CRT died out this week. I had hoped to get another year before switching to HD, but I find myself suddenly in need of a new set.

Because of several other things that have hit the past two weeks, I find myself needing to be price conscious, so am wondering if I should pick up a cheap 27" RCA SD in order to hold us over until the end of the year deals start kicking in, or just pick up one of the lower priced models that seem to be floating around right now (37" Westinghouse from buy.com or 42" Panny/Samsung plasmas).

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Prices will always drop, it's whether or not you're willing to wait. Will there be a few cheap sets? Yes. Any amazing deals? Probably not. Do you know what type of set you're looking for?

Because of the economy and the countdown to the conversion to HD signals at the end of February, I kind of doubt you will see many WOW deals on BF on HDTV. Many name brand HDTVs are in short supply, and if you look at the manufacture dates, they may be made less than one month before you buy it. My 46 inch Samsung was made about 3 weeks before I bought it, and the warehouse was sold out when I bought mine from Sears. I got the last one the store had then. Some off brands might be sold cheaper on BF but you take your chances with getting them repaired later.

Many off brand HDTVs are throwaways meaning you can not get parts for them if they break, or the costs to send them back to be repaired may almost equal the price of the set to replace it. Some companies require the original packing box to send them back for repairs, or then offer to sell you one for $200 or more, plus shipping, just to send it back, while you also pay return shipping. Read this link before deciding to buy off brand on an HDTV.

Fixed. Digital does not necessarily equal hidef.
