worth upgrading to a 5870

Ok with the upcoming release of the gtx570 (tommorow apparently)

and the eventual release of the 69xx series is it worth upgrading from my 4850 512mb to a 5870 from overclockers?

or better to hold off a few more days? got a budget of around £300 as im getting money for my 21st soon 😀

If it's a good deal on a 5870 then that would be a good upgrade. But if the 5870 is going to cost close to what the 570 and 6950 will go for, then it would be a bad upgrade.

In the US, 58xx cards are available at fire sale prices occasionally. I don't know if they're doing the same kind of things in your neck of the woods, but if you wait until one's on sale, you can get very good price / performance ratio on a 5870. I've seen 5870s selling for cheaper than you can buy a 6870 for, and if this is at all possible where you live, then it's really great pricing.

The 69xx and GTX 570 cards will be faster, but we're also pretty guaranteed they'll be priced much higher than a 5870 on sale. A 5870 is already about 2.5x faster than your 4850 and will be a significant upgrade.

you can find a 5870 for 249$ or so on newegg.

*IF* you want a card thats 15-20% faster, like a 480 or 570, those cost/will cost around 400$.

So yes the 5870 is a great deal of value at 249$ price tag, its very much a worthy upgrade.

There was Sapphire 5870 for sale on NEWEgg for $220 after rebate. I highly recommend getting that as I have a 4850 also and it's been overloaded on modern games, and I am getting that deal to replace it.

I would recommend getting it, because if you recall how previous upgrades have gone, the high end card from previous generation all disappear rather quickly because of the fire sale going on. And once they're gone, you're stuck with the current generation cards, and for the same dollar you can only get mid-tier cards, often with worse capability compared to the high end from prior generation.

Generally speaking, the best bang for the buck is a high end card from 1 generation earlier, as long as it has same capability as current generation card, ie. both supporting DX11

hold off a few more days as long as your current card is still working. There are no official information about the upcoming cards other than it is coming in a few days. Until then, there will be a price adjustment due to christmas and the new cards.

Given the release of the 6950 and 6970 next week, I would not be surprised to see AMD do something similar to what Nvidia did with the 460 and 470 with the 5870 in regards to price. If they lower all models of the 5870 to the $225-$250 range, the performance gap between the 570 and the 5870 will make the 570 a less attractive buy for lots of people. Granted the 570 will be faster, but fast enough to warrant $100+ more? Don't know if AMD is in a place financially to make an aggressive move like that or not though. Still, they are going to have to lower the price of the 5870 anyway to make room for the 6950....so they might as well.

AMD can't do that without completely negating the reason for the 6850 and 6870. Just not gonna happen.

58xx and 68xx are mutually exclusive unless they push the price further down on the 68xx cards. The 58xx cards have to die or there's just no reason at all for the 68xx cards, which are quite significantly smaller dies and cheaper for AMD. They want the 68xx cards to be in that segment, and I really don't think you'll see 5850 and 5870s for much longer. They both use the same TSMC 40nm process, they'd rather sell the 6xxx cards with that process, as those have higher margins. They'll let the inventory of the 58xx cards peter out and just not replace them with new inventory.

This.

It's killing market share for AMD to have both generations of cards selling together. I bet that AMD has already cut off 5870 chip production a while ago in order to empty the inventory by the time 6870 started flowing. The existing inventory will not last very much longer. The 6870 is manufactured with cost efficiency in mind, so they definitely get more margin out of it.
